Mostly aeshtetics based upgrades. No, you cannot rechamber your AR to fire .243, you cannot chop off any part of your barrel, you cannot drill holes in your receiver to reduce weight. The only thing you can do to your rifle is add flair.

There are a few examples of Geissele rails floating around various SOF units. Same goes for their SSF trigger.

My response would be roughly the same.
If there were some easy "upgrade" to the internals, it'd be implemented into damn near every AR on the market. It'd just be a few extra minutes while the part is being machined, if anything.

This happened in the past when supply was a real issue. In Vietnam, my grandfather had an M2 carbine cut down. Stock cut off, barrel shortened, basically there were excess amount of M1's and M2's thanks to gifts to the ARVN but due to supply issues, you didn't have many official choices. He just couldn't call someone to get a Thompson or Grease Gun and in his position, lugging around an M16 full-time wasn't a great option.

He operated artillery and setup artillery at outposts, so imagine shooting artillery in the hot fucking jungle all fucking day. Last thing you want is a huge ass rifle slung around you, and with the possibility of Gooks in the Wire, you wanted something more in capacity than a handgun (which he carried a captured Tokarev and a H&R .32 for most of his tour).

The M2 gave him firepower in a compact package, and didn't get in the way when dealing with artillery.

At least in that conflict, a group of guys might get together and have guns they shared. Sawn off shotguns were quite popular with country boys like my grandpa, and because you could point and shoot and probably hit a gook in the jungle. They'd often get stolen if you didn't quite literally have them bolted down or carried on your person.

You had SF doing more extravagant mods but where today the Army would outfit a specialized group with specialized weapons (tank crews aren't getting 20" M16's), you didn't have that in Vietnam so people had to adapt. Also the Army wasn't as centralized back then so nobody gave a fuck and the PC police didn't have fifty million regulations.

Vietnam was sort of the last period where some unit armourers would fiddle with various weapons to any major extent, note- unit armourers, with the permission of the CO after it goes up the chain.
Troopies don't get to fuck with their stuff.
They could present a case to their CO to have something made fit for purpose, then they might get it... maybe, provided the reason isn't completely daft.

The 'shorty' and 'bitch' SLR's was some of those cases- sear removed for full auto, couple of inches lopped off the barrel, experimental grenade launcher popped on (it might be an XM146- but don't quote me on that), most of the forestock thrown away to fit the GL and 30rd magazine as the 20rd wasn't really going to last very long. Though the 20's where a much more reliable mag from all accounts.
Reason- its the jungle, range isn't as important nor is long ranged, accurate semi-auto shots and stuff like the M16's where around not in huge numbers. So a big thundering 7.62 downrange did the trick, even if you didn't hit anyone, they where most certainly very deaf and wanted to be somewhere else, rapidly.

Now 50 years later, there's a lot of stuff on the market to suit most environments and some specialist circumstances to the point they can just put in a purchase and expedite it as quickly as possible. You won't have people being thrown digital scopes and bleeding edge, compact IR systems like chocolate bars for a while, depending on the military's budget for that particular job, but its nowhere near as inaccessible as it once was. Even then, you can guarantee someone will cut corners, so when we hit Afghanistan finding ourselves wanting something with a bit of reach out and touch than a 556 carbine, someone dragged out a whole heap of M14's that fell off a truck, armourers tuned them up and shipped them over.
Can't really say we loved them, but they worked and I didn't have to lug around one either, so I can't really complain!

Does the mission require a light and an optic? If so, it'll be attached.
Does the mission require white streaks to camouflage the rifle? If so, they'll be added.

Not much is really allowed these days unlike in Vietnam and WW2, which is where I think you're getting the idea from.
