Carrier landings take lots of skill and are hard is a myth,

You never have a crosswind and you never have to flare.

You've got FOUR fuckin wires. How can you miss?

I can't think of anything that's easier than this.
>>
You have to have autism to land on a carrier
I know because my autistic friend was the only one who could land in Top Gun NES
>>
The problem is that fuckups are immediately fatal
>>
>>33466363
You ever been on a boat before? It's not like it's sitting still in the water. Oceans have currents and waves. You ever try moving a vehicle when you can't see what you're doing? I don't know what the cockpit view is in most planes but there is no way you can see a whole lot under you or how much space you have from you to the back of the plane. You could be off by a bit didn't get a straight run in, came in too fast. There seems like a ton of factors that would make someone retry a landing a few times until they know what the thing is capable of.
>>
>>33466378
That's a goddamned lie. You can't land in the nes top gun. I played that game for years and never Managed end mission landing once. I refuse to believe it could be done.
>>
>>33466363
I wanna take off from a carrier some day before I die. 200 knots in under 2 seconds, that's my kinda fun. Do a barrel roll just after takeoff just like in Top Gun.
>>
>>33466480
AVGN did it with the powerglove
>>
>>33466363

But then you're stuck on a boat...

In the middle of nowhere...

With five thousand other men.

Join the Navy? I don't think so.
Living on a boat? Hey, I don't think so.

>Attempting a night landing aboard USS Abraham Lincoln, operating in the Eastern Indian Ocean, Grumman F-14A-90-GR Tomcat, BuNo 159843,[86] 'NH 111',[87] of VF-213, piloted by Lt. Matthew T. Claar "Planet", first bird in the recovery cycle, drops below approach slope just before reaching fantail, suffers massive ramp strike at 2104:33 hrs. with rear fuselage striking deck and completely disintegrating aft of the wing in huge fireball and pitching airframe up on its nose and skidding along port edge of the angle leaving trail of burning fuel in its wake. Both crew eject in Martin-Baker seats, but only RIO Lt. Dean A. Fuller survives, trajectory into the water off the angle, with minor injuries, recovered by SAR helicopter.[88] Pilot, who sequenced out first, did so while the airframe was extremely nose-low, landed on deck and died on impact, immediate attempts to resuscitate him for nought. LSO had repeatedly tried to wave him off, according to CPL Kevin R. Fox, Powerline, VMFA-314 Black Knights, whom the pilot landed right in front of. Through diligent efforts of crew, all fires were extinguished and a ready deck was available for further recoveries in 33 minutes. An award, a sword, is given to the outstanding Midshipman 1/C selected for Naval Aviation, chosen by the NROTC Staff at Villanova University in Lt. Claar's memory, where he was a 1986 graduate.[88] Footage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0p85dJMsXIk.

Just install a flight simulator and land with crosswind and do a carrier landing. Do these after spending at least 50 hours in the simulator.

In my case I was able to land consistently with harsh weather conditions in FSX while I still sometimes miss the cables when the weather is bad.

What people don't realize is at slow speeds fighter jets are affected by the weather a lot and really the turbulent air matters which is the same for land and carrier based operations, constant crosswind is not a very big deal. So I think carrier landings are a bit harder.

>>
>>33469793

Well if the wire snaps, yes. But if he approaches too fast, misses the cables and then can't recover in time for instance.

I'm sure it happens.
>>
>>33469535
Looked to me like his lips were frozen and he was really stiff. Considering how his canopy was jacked up he might have had an oil leak which would have made it impossible to see.

Which explains why he landed with his canopy open. He had to open it at altitude to locate the carrier and land the plane. I can't imagine he survived.
>>
>>33468476
Aren't you supposed to gun it so you can do a go around if necessary? he just falls lazily into the sea
>>
>>33469910

You can see the cable trailing him if you watch closely. Means he caught it, but it snapped.
>>
>>33469910
Yes you need to apply MIL thrust but it looks like wire slows him down and snaps when he's almost stopped. You can't recover from that.
>>
>>33469898
Keeping the canopy open during takeoff and landing was done so that they could get out in time in case there was a fire or they went overboard. It was pretty standard to do when landing, not just when you've got oil on your windscreen.
>>
>>33469956
>you can't recover from that
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-EHwYOfY94

Depends on a lot of things, but it can be done.
>>
>>33469898
After looking into it a bit more it seems to be an F6F Hellcat which would have been cruising at about 170 mph. Around 8000 feet the air is below freezing. The operational altitude of the plane was much higher.

Dude managed to land the plane but he probably froze himself to death in the process.

IIRC it wasn't the cable but the arresting engine itself that failed. The second one there's a splash ahead of the jet in the water, I think it's a piece of the arresting gear that pulled out of the deck and got flung forward.

Landing in manual is retardedly hard to learn. We spend a ridiculous amount of sorties learning how to land on the ship. Guys attrite from training all the time for disqualifying at the carrier.

Good news is that we are in the midst of a revolution in technology that will make landing on the carrier very easy. Unfortunately the integration of magic carpet is slow. I would estimate in the next few years things will be almost completely transitioned over.

That being said, magic carpet won't make a dark night less dark, or make you not have vertigo, or make the metal landing area more forgiving or wider. I don't think I can convey the feeling of blue water ops to people. Knowing you're in some part of the world you have never been to before, and knowing you don't really have a divert option, and you have to land on this ship. That feeling is very unique. You remember that one night where you boltered a bunch of times and had to tank. It's shitty, you just try not to think about it.

Well yes, big factor is the type of airplane as well. The stall speed of the E-3 is probably much more forgiving than the big heavy jets.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o67iGu3E8Gc

It's insane, crewman almost gets snagged and then if you're the pilot you have to worry about the carrier running you over if you manage to eject.

Now, I've never done it, but I'm a private pilot and I got to play with one of Boeing's Hornet boxes and it was fairly easy provided a stabilised approach. You literally pit the flight director on the box and maintained airspeed until smashing into the deck. Like a mistimed short feild, every time.

And then promptly get sucked under the ship and ensure your death. k.

I dont know if fighters do it but bigger planes, like c130 up, have a fuckton of cameras, and some are pointed at tge ground so they can see whats in front of them and the taxi lines.
I have no idea if that would be helpful trying to land or not or what the cockpit view is. I never got a chance to sit in a 15 because they were always on standby.

There are edies, and the wake of the island, blus the ship moves more than pilots want, troll,
>>

>land the other planes first and then set up the net
Imagine if they had another whole event coming in behind him and no time for the barricade without locking the flight deck and stranding a ton of other jets in the air with no fuel reserve.
>Oh, uh.... I know you just busted a nosewheel and might have other unknown damage to your aircraft which may be worsening by the minute and probably can't wait until this is over, but we're gonna send a tanker up for you to loiter for another hour while we recover the 20-ship alpha strike package coming in behind you.

I... I will never be a corsair pilot with friends who fly corsairs... why live?

>>33469553
Whatever is going on there, it's clearly not impeding the engine so it's not oil and it's probably not fuel.
>>
>>33469172
>Because there will never be any operational maneuvers that take place while planes are landing or taking off?
Basically no.
The world powers won't fight each other, no country with a carrier fights equals anymore. They're used to beat up on minor powers.
>>
>>33469172
NO, you will not be landing on a turning carrier. Jesus fucking christ, this is GRADE SCHOOL SHIT! If the carrier must turn during your recovery, they will either wait for you to hit the deck first, or they will wave you off, depending how close you get, not that anyone with carriers even fights a power that can threaten a carrier anymore.

CHECK EM'

On the last clip, what was the dude who dived under the engine doing?
>>
>>33471063

Sailor here. Even in modern times if you go over into the drink chances are that by the time they turn a 300m ship around at 16 knots there is a very slim chance they are going to ever find you.

>>
>>33476899
which is why they... wait, they DO have the pilot recovery birds on standby don't they? And also have dye that stands out on the water, and transponders and various other stuff, or is the transponder a load of shit?
>>
>>33468442
That guy getting pulled out of his aircraft at 20seconds, is he being pulled out because it was a bad landing and he broke something or did something happen during his flight which caused the bad landing?

I can only imagine what that aircraft would if it were sentient.

Well, my dad crashed a jet into the ocean once, apparently that night the entire squadron showed up to do a roof stomp or some shit.

idk basically everyone is just glad you aren't fucking dead, provided the crash wasn't your fault ofc.

Imagine being on the elevator. You're lowering a hellcat back into the hangar, maybe chatting with your buddies and the pilot, you hear a noise, look up and then see another Hellcat dangling above you.

Close enough. Climb out, wipe your hands, and walk away.
