I don't know if it's different for some people but I don't have any issue firing without ear protection, it's not that bad. Yes, I do still hear the EEEEEEEE immediately afterwards but it's in no way over powering.

I don't do it often, just occasionally when something in my yard really needs to be killed quick (I've even mag dumped 30 rounds of 9mm at a time when there's two or more) or if I'm hunting and only intend to make one shot and again, it needs to be shot immediately. I still pass all my mandatory hearing tests at work and can hear noises at all pitches better than many people who don't shoot I know. I do have a problem understanding people's words if they don't annunciate well or talk quickly though but I'm pretty sure I've always had that issue.

I'd imagine it's still doable, military and police do it without ear pro, especially if a building isn't walled with steel but something soft
