it would behoove you not to cheap out here. another few hundred dollars and you can get a decent rifle that will outlast you. this is one of those cases where you should spend more money and not just settle for whats attainable now.

No AK currently sold for under $800 is worth it. Save up for an Arsenal SLR or a Molot Vepr.

A WASR for $600 funbux is still a good AK for your money.
If he doesnt have the money to buy an arsenal or a VEPR, he wouldn't exactly be getting fucked in that transaction, he'd be just fine.

I'd honestly stay away from anything that isnt a Yugo, WASR, Arsenal, or VEPR.
"American made" AKs, especially the newer brands tend to fucking suck and most havent been around long enough to verify how shitty they are.
Do not buy an I.O. unless you want to maim yourself.

Any of the above mentioned AKs will do you just fine.

Only other thing I would caution you on is that Yugo AKs are not "AKM pattern" rifles, meaning they take special snowflake furniture specifically for Yugos. All the other brands listed are AKM pattern and you can swap furniture and bits as at will.
If you really want some impractical as fuck fun, get yourself a Draco or an M92.
