What's a relatively easy and preferably legal way way for a tourist to the US to get hold of a gun? I'm British if that makes a difference
Buy one.

How can I legally do that? Assuming a regular gun store wouldn't sell me one?
You could try a private sale.

Go to a shooting range that rents them, then.
Federal law at 18 U.S.C. ยง 922 bans the sale of firearms or ammunition to aliens except for permanent residents, which would rule out any foreign tourist being able to purchase guns

If I'm not mistaken, black-powder weapons are not legally considered firearms in the US. OP could buy a cap revolver?

yes OP could buy a muzzeloader or ball and cap pistol however loading it turns it into a firearm and he would be breaking the law again

Rent a gun at a range or make friends with a /k/ommando in the area you're visiting to go innawoods for cheeki breeki, shooting, and sodomy.

You can't "legally" own one as a tourist. If you just want to rent one, go to a range. Call ahead to make sure they will rent to non-Americans, if they've never done it or don't know the law they might tell you to fuck off rather than check to see if it's allowed.

I wouldn't see a foreigner one even if it were legal. Foreigners don't deserve guns.
