It punches through cover better than 5.56 which can actually be a big deal in combat. It also has much better terminal ballistics at range and probably up close too unless you have a lot of faith in 5.56 fmj fragmentation. If you're talking HPs .308 hands down is more lethal. It also would be the caliber of choice for a DMR as someone else already pointed out as a .338 would be a handicap in cqb.

When I was selecting a home defense rifle, intermediate cartridges didn't carry enough lethality through barriers like exterior doors and vehicle windshields/doors. Also, 5.56 is shit past 300m and my use case included shots out to 800m.

It's pretty damn easy to find 7.62 or .308 rounds at any ammo store, but .338 isn't as common, and it's usually significantly more expensive.

Similarly, it's pretty difficult to find a semi-auto in .338 that isn't a special snowflake the price of a used car or without getting some custom gunsmithing done. However, you can pick up an excellent PTR, FAL or AR10 off the shelf for about a grand and replacement parts are not hard to find at all.

I don't need to worry about bullet weight because I'm a goddamn civilian now and I don't have to worry about humping >200 rounds of ammo all day. Also, 5.56 might shatter and 5.45 might yaw, but 7.62 still punches big fucking holes in people even if they're behind intermediate cover.

A big part of how great those shows were was because, even though it was nearly impossible for anyone to win, a few truly skilled could do it and it was all the more exciting when someone beat the course. And even more dramatic when they made it even harder the next time.
