the troubles were a sorry state of affairs and there were no good guys because the british soldiers were following orders and the IRA soldiers were fighting because people WERE getting killed by the SAS

I think this is the problem a lot of people run into. The English had the earliest involvement in Ireland, but only when they too were a Catholic country and Henry II invaded it because the Pope told him to. By the time the 20th century rolled around, the majority of the damage done in Ireland was done by Scots. About 2/3 of the Unionists were Scottish, the rest being English, and the Scots were also responsible for the worst of the atrocities in the bit now known as the Republic.

The more historically aware Republicans and PIRA types were well aware of this, but knew the political capital in portraying it as a fight against the English (as opposed to some Northern English and Scottish rednecks, against select Irish rednecks) was too good to pass up on.

I would back the majority. Those who wanted to go to work, school and church without someone blowing them up. Those who wanted to go shooting on a weekend without having their guns seized by a Communist trained by Gadaffi. People who wanted to marry their girlfriends without being kicked out of their church for "betrayal."
