I'm very confilcted, /akg/. I have about 1,200 dollars total. I'm 18 and gonna be buying my first gun soon. I've got my eyes set on an SLR-104, but they're just so damn expensive. I'd like to be able to buy a few other rifles as well. Are there any other nice AK-74s for a lower price?

Not the guy you were responding to, but I can walk into any gun store and buy a box of 7.62x39. 5.45 I have to order online.

Not that that's a huge issue or anything, but it is nice being able to pop into Walmart for ammo.
>>
>>33427240
7.62x39 is still cheap and easy to find, is OK for hunting deer and anything smaller than that, heavier bullet doesn't change its trajectory as easily as smaller bullets, and obviously it kicks the target harder. 7.62 AK mags are also everywhere.

Have fun plinking with ammo that you don't have, I sold my 74 three years ago because you can't find decent ammo worth shit. 7.62 is literally everywhere and you don't have to twist your dick in a knot to find decently priced ammo. Also have fun paying $30 a mag minimum most places with even a minuscule amount of good reputation.

But go ahead- buy your dream gun and totally ignore everyone telling you otherwise with good reason.

Sanded off the fugly ass puke yellow finish until you could see grain
Sanded again and again with finer and finer grit sandpaper until it was very smooth (start at 120g and stop at 400g)
Stained it with some gun-stock colored wood stain (with some red + orange dye mixed in for a more bakelite color)
Applied about 5-6 of amber shellac (from a air compressed spray brush)
Sanded that with 800g sandpaper to take the bumps off (about to hit the stock up with it tomorrow)
Applied another 3-4 coats of shellac (from a air compressed spray brush)
Wait for it to dry (about a week to be sure here since it's humid and chilly)
Do what you will to the stock (I engraved Serbian crest as best as I could and filled with antique gold rub buff)
(If you do do anything like engrave the stock remember to put a coat or two more of shellac to re-seal the furniture)

And at the moment I'm just waiting for the current final sealing coat of shellac to dry so I can sand with really fine sandpaper and apply some dulling wax so it isn't super glossy.

Not him but there is a lot of options out there. If you just want the wood to be darker but retain the same matte finish, get some stain. Lightly sand the wood with some fine sandpaper then apply the stain using a brush or old stock. Lots of stain options out there, and since you have a blonde wood the color shown on the stain container will be close. It will be darker when you apply it, so let it dry before deciding to add another coat.

If you want gloss, you've got two main options: Polyerethane and shellac. Poly is much stronger but IMO has a more plasticy shine to it. Shellac is more fragile; it will chip if you ding it, but it gives a rich luster. There are a lot of guides on how to apply shellac as well. Shellac comes in clear and amber colors. Amber is what a lot of ruskie stocks use.

What I did for this rifle stock is two coats of red oak stain, followed by about 30 coats of amber shellac; all applied with an old sock.
I'd coat it then set it down for an hour to dry before applying another coat. However, this wood was a bit darker than yours is, and also has unique grain patterns while yours does not so the final product wont look the same
>>
>>33427826

I can find 5.45 pretty easy online and its the same price as 7.62x39. Mags are around 30 bucks sure, but they fucking last forever.

So yea... no real cons to owning a 5.45 or a 7.62, though I do recommend a 7.62 for your first AK

Even with a stamped receiver the barrel will go out before the receiver. You're talking like 50k rounds or more before the receiver may or may not crack, and those are with full auto rifles. Probably 75k with semi-auto only

Battlefield Las Vegas on stamped AKs:

"...fair to say that they finally suffer a catastrophic failure (cracked trunion) at 80,000-100,000 rounds. Also, we have WASR’s that have suffered a catastrophic failure and we just pull out the old trunion and barrel, grab one from a parts kit, re-rivet, re-barrel and get them up and running."

Those are full-auto rifles being magdumped by tourists every day.

>>
>>33427963
Yeah pretty much it's such a high round count it isn't worth devoting a lot of time researching. If you shor that much a $1000 rifle is literally inconsequential. I've never read a forum post of a civilian shooting their Whole AK out, barrels yes, trunnions or receivers no
>>
>>33427983
Not him but I'd go stamped for the weight savings. I'd probably buy one decent milled (with a fixed stock, no underfolder) rifle to pass down.

Also depending on how much alcohol you mix with the shellac it can range from paper thin to reliably thick, but also keep in mind high % mixture of alcohol dries really quickly allowing you to put on more layers quicker, but the thicker shellac w/ lower % mixed alcohol will dry slower but usually apply in thick coats.

finally solved the VEPR rail issues. i built a solid billet rail with an additional rivet so the scope will lock down tight and not change point of aim when you pull trigger. excuse the poor paintjob, i tried to matte down a glossier aluma-hyde and it needs to be cured and sanded, or stripped and redone

had to make my own rivets from round stock as well.

the VEPR mount is cast, hollow on the back, only has a rivet on each end, and bows to where you could probably slip a shim between it and the receiver. then when you go to install an SVD or AK type mount, either one places the claws over cutouts on the rail so they barely have any dovetail to lock on to.
there may be other mounts on the market, but i needed to move the scope up half an inch so i just made one. now after doing all this they started to sell a taller version of the scope for VEPRs, but oh well.

1600ft-lbs hollow points will serve you better than a 50 grain mild steel tumbling round.

5.45 advantages
>lighter, soldier can carry more, more ammo in a box, more ammo in a plane
>less material, cheaper to produce and ship
>less recoil for grazing fire etc
>extended effective range out to say 4-500
>perhaps .5MOA accuracy by design

they really don't serve a civilian all that well
I love 5.45 its really neat, but not for any real practical reason

the only practical advantages 5.45 has over 7.62 are it's more controllable on full auto, and its lighter.

minus the full auto for us, it's lighter, whoo pee, incredible.

Both land hits on man sized targets out to 300 yards, so accuracy is irrelevant considering were talking tissue damage I imagine were talking about combat use of the rounds, and not fudd paper shooting bench rested, but if so yes, you may get 1 moa more out of 5.45, whoo pee, incredible.

at extended ranges 5.45 is easily swayed by wind, and 7.62 becomes more accurate due to a larger heavier projectile being more stable in flight.
>>
>>33430493

forgot to add the only round even remotely "good" in the 5.45 market in 7n6, which is already decades old surplus and slighter better then 7.62 m43 ball in flesh, which isn't anything to write home about at all.

commercial offerings of 5.45 are all out of spec regarding velocity.

Finnish Defense Forces uses RK95+ACOG as their "DMR" of sorts, and has shown to drop targets at 450m.
Then again, even in WW2 people realized that huge majority of combat takes place at distances LESS than 200 meters. This is especially true innawoods and in dense urban environment. In home defense situations, you got a couple meters of space at best.

>those slant cuts were in abomination IMO
Personally, I like the slant cuts on rifles with the sporter stocks.
But it'd be better overall if they were all straight cuts and more convertible though. And it's not just the rear stock, it'd be nice if the sporter furniture required the regular rpk retainers so you could swap at will.
>>
>>33432068
FIME group wasn't the ones bringing in the 1V's.
>>
>>33432222
When the fuck did sporter veprs have fluted barrels?
>>
>>33432394
True, but since then FIME made a deal with Molot to be the only US company to import their guns, so IO won't be able to get any more 1V's from Molot.

It was only the 556/545 ones that had them. Just shortly before the russian sanctions.
I wanted to buy one so bad, they were only 500 each.

M43 is worse than 7n6
but Yugo M68/Golden Tiger also tumbles

also, Winchester, Hornady, Federal, Remington, and PPU make good expanding ammo, and all the usual suspects make ok-ish steel jacket SP
with 5.45, you're limited to V-Max or FMJ

5.45 does tumble better, but the quality and variety of expanding (a better wounding mechanism) ammo for 7.62 is far superior

Question I understand that krebs custom rifles are concidered questionable at best, but what about their stock mounts? I'm looking at their m4 stock adapters and was wondering if anyone has experience with them be that personnel or second hand.
another question I have a arsenal slr 107 and was wondering from the adapter options there are yugo and saiga adaptor options the slr would take the saiga adaptor correct?
last question does anyone have experience with the gen 3 dogleg from texas weapon I understand the gen 2 had some problems but hear they fixed them in gen 3

phone posting so heres some cute bacon
