penetration wise, but if it can only handle one shot and fragment on a 2nd i'd omit it. most situations wouldn't really let you swap out armor quickly if it's being penetrated.

Yes Inconel is hard to machine, the hotter it gets the harder it gets, especially at extreme temperatures.

It is heavier than steel, but stronger so parts can be made thinner.

A composite would be interesting. Maybe carbon nanotubes like another anon said or boron fibers. Ideally an aramid would be better. With the first two you could potentially use a metal matrix or ceramic. Problem would be getting a good bind for the matrix.
