Lewis gun's magazine was open on the underside.
Maxim guns used cloth ammo bands that would cause stoppages when wet.
Many MGs simply used metal strips.
The magazine was fragile, but it was never as much of an issue as it's made up to be.
The bad reputation of this gun is almost entirely because of a version that wasn't even used on the frontline but only for training because they were out of spec.
Other nations that used the gun didnt have a problem with it by and large, and the Belgian version was even considered the best.
