>be me
>Be at church with dad because Bible belt
>after service he wants me to go meet some old fellow
"I told him about your interest in guns and he said he has an old one he doesn't want anymore"
>Think it'll be some shitty fudd .22
>This old fucker pulls an arisaka out of his trunk
>Shake his hand and thank him while barely containing my autism
>Now the catch
>Bolt won't close all the way
>Buttplate mising a screw and falling off
>Mysterious brown goop in the barrel
>Rusted to shit

How can I fix this thing up while retaining it's authenticity? For reference I'm a poorfag that only has a nugget, a bubba's Mauser, and a few .22s.
>>
take it apart, get some scotchbrite and OX-24 and scrub a dub dub, likely it's just full of rust and other gunk, you don't need to pour any nasty chemicals on it that will fuck up the furniture or anything, any normal rifle cleaning kit will probably do desu
>>
Can you get the bolt out of it?
>>
>>33395746
Yeah I got the bolt out pretty easily. >>33395717
But how should I get the brown stuff out of the barrel? Am I gonna just have to bite the bullet and use a rag on a stick?
>>
>>33395687
>old fellow
>arisaka
Do.. do you think maybe he brought it back?
>>
>>33395771
>how should I get the brown stuff out of the barrel?
Get yourself a long one-piece carbon-fiber, aluminum, or plastic-coated steel cleaning rod. Pour a little Ballistol down the bore, let it sit for a few minutes, then try to swab a wet patch through and push the gunk in it out.
>>
>>33395800
If it's got an intact mum, perhaps. If it's scrubbed there's a much lower chance
>>
>>33395862
>If it's scrubbed there's a much lower chance
There's actually a very good chance. As a conciliatory gesture to the defeated Japanese MacArthur ordered all servicemen to scrub the imperial coat of arms off their war souvenirs. The largest source of Arisaka rifles in the US, scrubbed or not, is bring-backs from the Pacific; comparatively few have survived to be in national inventories of countries that later sold their surplus rifles to US importers.

He said he got it from his brother, and I asked if he was a marine, he said no.

Here's the chrysanthemum

>>33395908
>I asked if he was a marine, he said no.
The majority of American ground combat troops in the Pacific were Army.
>>
>>33395941
My mistake, but I'd assume he would say his brother was in the army if he was.
>>
>>33395717
Scotchbrite will not only remove blueing, but it will scratch steel as well. We actually used to to polish tool marks out of injections molds when I worked in that industry. Use #000 or #0000 steel wool instead.

I'm probably gonna take it to my LGS tomorrow and see if they have any advice after looking at it in person. To be honest I'm a little scared I'll fuck up the rifle.
>>
Congratulations! That's a great find, and I'm very happy this rifle will be with someone who appreciates it.

Parts are available online, at Liberty Tree among other places. However, this may be a case in which you might want to take the rifle to a professional gunsmith for a full inspection and cleaning. I recently did the same with my Spanish Mauser, and my guy charged me $50 bucks (and I'm in California where anything gun-related is expensive). I'd suggest that it's probably worth it to make sure there's no hidden pitting anywhere important, that the barrel and firing pin are in good shape, that everything's properly oiled, and so on. Go ahead and talk to one and get an estimate.

As for ammo, I think PPU still makes 7.7mm Japanese. It's more expensive than popular hunting calibers, but it still ain't that bad.

Enjoy it! Treat it right, and have fun!

Type 38 from I believe the Tokyo artillery arsenal, due to the very early front sight. Guys in the milsurp thread will know more than I do though.

>>33396021
You're not gonna break the damn thing if that's what youre worried about. Type 38s are among the strongest rifles ever made.
>>
>>33396050
Glorious Nippon steel folded 5000 times, stronger than any mauser action.
>>
Thanks for the advice fellas, I'll probably just take it to a local gunsmith first and see how much it'll cost me to get it worked on, since I don't wanna fuck it up any more than it already is. Will update upon restoration.
>>
>>33396078
Looks like it just needs cleaning chief.
>>
Whoa... just to be sure you know, that is a type 38 and it shoots 6.5 Japanese, NOT 7.7 japanese. Enjoy!
>>
Also, +1 on cleaning. Oil everything but I wouldnt sand any rusty metal. I have 9 arisakas and some are rusty and some arent... I don't fuck with em
>>
>>33396038
>>33396050
>>33396075

Actually they use 6.5mm instead of 7.7mm so no worries.
>>
>>33396038
>>33395998
>>33396013
Yeah, it was made by Tokyo Arsenal in the during the latter part of WWI or a little bit afterwards.
>>33396078
It just needs a little TLC. Get some good oil and soak the metal for awhile.
>>
Scrub that active rust with a bronze brush/bronze wool. Get that shit off there before it pits your gun even more.
>>
>>33395687
electrolysis tank
>>
>>33395687
Pretty sure that brown goop is just cosmoline
>>
>>33396029
Other anons are saying it's a type 38, which would mean it's in 6.5 Jap.

>poorfag buys milsurp in terrible condition that fires $2 snowflake rounds because he got excited
Sounds about right. I hope you didnt pay more than wall hanger price for it. If you plan to buy milsurp you need to learn how to pass on something, even if its interesting.

>how can i, as a poorfag, spend double the worth of a rifle trying to fix it into near original condition before i even know if the barrel is garbage
I read it. It was a bad buy, plain and simple. It happens to the best of us. Best case scenario he bought it for $50 and will put enough into it to have spent its original value.
>>
>33401384

Not even worth a sarcastic (you).

He never said he bought it, you fucking downs syndrome mongoloid. Pls kys.
>>
>>33395771
cork one end of the barrel and fill it with marvel mystery oil or ATF, and let it sit for a few days

then drain it, and go at it with a copper brush and clean as normal
