FAL's

Im new to them but I know I want one, where do I start and what barrel length?

What you want is a DSA Voyager. They're the best new production FALs to date. Every part is made to spec with a 0.001% margin of error. All of their furniture and magazines are standard and interchangeable with other standard ones. Lastly they offer robust forged receivers and none of that cast shit.
>>
>>33391103
Doesn't the Voyager have an aluminum lower reciever?

21in fixed stock surplus build.

And paint it with a sock.
>>
>>33391230
Hk fanboy detected.

OP, go for DSA if you want a new one and get a 21" barrel. Avoid century at all cost

Get an account on FAL Files
Get a forged receiver, Voyagers are shit
21 inch or 18 inch will totally be preference, but 21 is more classic
Don't buy a shortgas FAL
Expect to pay between 1000 and 1300

>>33391389
Not OP but I was considering getting a Voyager, whats the issue?

I will never understand the requirement in the States to have that minimum amount of US-made parts (922r?) Hard to believe it would make my all-Brit L1A1 illegal there.
>>
>>33391420
cast receiver
>>
Thanks for the info guys, I was browsing dsa and the voyager is 1200 while basically the same thing with rails is 1800.

I have around 1300-1500 im willing to part with, I have even read up on building one and it doesnt seem that complicated once you have all the tools
>>
>>33391420
Cast receiver feels like shit, fit and finish of parts

I played with one at a gunshow and it feels like a cheap toy compared to a real FAL
>>
>>33391562
So wheres the best place to get a real FAL?
>>
>>33391670
FAL Files
Gunbroker
Armslist
Getting lucky at a gunshow or LGS

FALs are 99% a secondhand market. If you're serious about getting one sign up at FAL Files right now, it'll take a while to get your account activated
>>
>>33391319
why 21" isn't 18" only like 50 fps slower?
>>
>>33391683
Are there any new production ones that aren't shit? Are the non voyager DSA ones OK? Should I just get a PTR 91?
>>
>>33391788
New production DSA forged are good enough since they were still a grab bag of random surplus parts as far as I know, nothing that'll be historically neat like a kit build would be though

If you could grab one for 1k or less it'd be an alright starter FAL, but anything more than that and you can get an Imbel or an Stg58 kit build
>>
>>33391718
Aesthetic reasons and more like 150-200 fps if I remember correctly
>>
>>33391806
Thats pretty disappointing, the Voyagers are $1200 and the higher end ones are $1800 and up. Maybe I should just buy a PTR, they're $950 and I never hear complaints
>>
>>33391439
it really only applies to importers. No ATF agent is gonna inspect your rifle for a required number of US made parts. Even if they did, how can they tell the difference between a non-serialized part made in the US and one made in Britain?
>>
>>33391875
PTR will be a helluva lot cheaper than an FAL, plus the market is easier since there's still quality new production stuff coming out, it's literally almost like comparing AR to AK market

If the Voyagers were about 600 or so they'd be worthwhile, but there's literally no reason to buy one when kit built FALs on Imbel or DSA LMT receivers can be had for about 1100-1300 at the low end. Also FAL mags are about 20 at the low end, G3 mags can be had for 2-3 bucks, so this is also something to consider
>>
>>33391909
What condition are the kit builds generally, unissued, light wear or heavy use?
>>
>>33391806
DSA doesnt have any new production forged besides bare receivers, do they?
>>
>>33391951
Nope, I meant new production in the sense that DSA took surplus parts and their own forged receivers to make new rifles before the voyager line came along. I think they just ran out of surplus parts and started making it all in house which cost a lot more but I could be wrong

Also good info for OP, all new DSA rifles are cast, forged DSA manufacture rifles will all be secondhand basically

>>33391950
Anywhere from unissued to well used, all barrels besides Steyr Stg58s were chrome lined though, and most kits are in pretty damn good condition. You should check it over like anything else but it shouldn't be hard to find something in good condition
>>
>>33391983
Does anyone sell them preassembled or do I need to find the kit, buy it, buy a receiver, then find a builder, and send it to them with the receiver ?
>>
>>33392010
You can do either, but good fuckin luck finding a quality FAL receiver right now

Like I said, grab an account on FAL Files and watch the market place. People sell their assembled kit builds all the time, that'll be one of the easiest ways to get a quality FAL
>>
>>33392027
Are these assembled kit builds made for the sole purpose of sale or are they generally used? I get a bit suspicious that I'd buy Bubba's poorly headspaced build made out of a grab bag of parts.
>>
>>33392048
Generally used, there's not really much money to be made in assembling FALs when receivers are 600+ and kits start at 400 for beat to hell Imbel kits, not including shipping.

The only way to really fuck up an FAL build is a poorly timed barrel, and you can get gauges if you're worried about headspace
>>
>>33391879
Most of the USA made parts I've bought have USA stamped on them
>>
Is any one making new barrels except dsa? Or does anyone know anyone who custom makes them?
>>
>>33392071
>when receivers are 600+

LoL that is how much I paid for my whole FAL STG58 with matching numbers about 13 years ago
>>
>>33391230
HK is gay.
>>
>>33392240
I paid about 500 for my 74 with like 200 in mags, ammo, and drago case :^
