What kind of land are you hunting in? In a forest or over a field? I've hunted big woods my whole life, field hunting sounds boring to me. It also requires more knowledge of how deer act and more time to find where they are, and even more luck to be in the same place as them.

These are good shots, in order of decent to best:
>one lung
>both lungs
>the heart
>both lungs + the heart

If you can score both lungs and the heart in one shot, that's a very clean shot, and the deer should drop very fast.

DON'T try for a headshot, it's difficult and they have thick, sloped skulls, even a .270 or .30-06 can deflect alongside it.
Try to not gutshoot the deer, for obvious reasons.

But seriously, breath slow, make sure you have a clean shot broad side right behind the shoulder parallel to the joint. You'll take it in the heart and lung if you place your shot well.

It will probably go down pretty instantly if you do, but duur are weird and it also might run for a bit.

Don't get to close if it's still alive when you approach, if necessary, followup with a shot to the same place described.

Don't shoot a silhouetting deer if your hunting near ridge lines and make sure you only take shots you feel comfortable with. Wounding game with a poor shot makes you a bad sportsman and could lead to serious fines as well.

Makes sure your comfortable with the process field dressing deer if necessary.

Remember to bring a lot of water if you don't have a cooler becasue nothing spoils meet faster than heat and bacteria.

Other than that I'd say remember to have fun and if you plan on using a vibrator to get scent from doe, /k/ommandos will pay you for it.
