As far as I know, there is no "objectively best" helmet. However, both the US M1 helmet and the M1935 Stahlhem are top contenders for being the best-designed steel ballistic helmets (in addition to being the most aesthetic IMO).

From what I understand, the rounded shape of the M1 made it more successful at deflecting shrapnel that came from overhead. However, the 1935 Stahlhelm was better at shrapnel coming from the sides and rear, along with providing superior neck protection.

It should be noted that the Stahlhelm's iconic design would go on to have great influence the shape of modern Kevlar helmets like the PASGT and ACH. I personally would choose that if I had to wear a steel helmet for some reason.

Nearly every experimental allied helmet of WWI turned out looking like it, but they didn't want to get shot by friendlies. The only reason it wasn't universally adopted after the war was because it was the "bad guys" helmet.

Helmets even in the modern day mainly protect from incidental damage and environment conditions, they don't soak up blows to the head. Even those fancy ballistic DOOM helmets the military is trying out aren't going to stop a 7.62 Real Fucking NATO or equivalent from rearranging your face.

Not saying that helmets have no purpose, just that their purpose is not primarily to tank blows about the head (which, unsurprisingly, were the #1 means of battlefield deaths in the middle ages based on excavations)

The Irish Army actually got Vickers to manufacture a version of the Stahlhelm for them post-WW1. At the start of WW2 they had to downgrade back to the tommy helmet because of the Nazi's. It looked a lot like those experimental helmets in that picture.

Has anyone made a 1400's sallet out of modern materials used for bullet proof armour? It would be pretty interesting to see how useful bullet proof armour in the style of the rather fancy 1400's-1500's plate suits would turn out.

Dutch M.27. Used by Romania as well and the M.74 modification is still in use by some armies. A guy on youtube tests helmets and this outperformed the M56.
