How long does it take to learn how to properly service 1911-platform handguns at the level of a decent gunsmith? People claim it's one of the trickier jobs in all of normal gunsmithing, but how tricky IS it?

1911 are not "platforms", for starters. they are automatic pistols, of an ancient and exceedingly shitty pattern
the Zumwalt is a "platform".
this being said, 1911s are exactly like sushi - something that can barely pass muster, unless prepared by the right pair of hands, and even then, there are infinitely better options

It's just tedious and takes patience and someone who's good at thinking through a mechanism. 1911's are my fav, but they need a lot of attention to assemble one correctly, part of what makes them so nice. Just lots of patience. They're tedious, worth it in my opinion. They're not as outdated as people like to think they are.

Depends on your skill set. I can watch some YouTube videos and do a trigger job or tune an extractor but I know I would fuck up milling a dovetail. Check out mosinvirus, he seems like a regular dude with good analytical skills and attention to detail who can churn out some impressive (for an amateur) builds.
