in your situation i would say pepper spray is probably the best solution, for both you and your GF. make sure you get one that shoots in a stream, not a fog, and practice it a bit to get the hang of where it shoots and its range. also have your gf practice as well. instruct her to have it in her hands when leaving work or walking around at night or whatever. it can be done easily, most are small enough to put on a keychain and look very innocent

theres a vid comparing both, its up to you but i would rather have range and safety from blowback. the last thing you want is your GF to be blinded and disoriented herself when there are some attackers nearby. the stream gives you more flexibility and is just as effective at close range, obviously you just have to be a bit more precise but anyone who has ever used a garden hose should have no problem walking the stream to the general head area of a person. and the stream has vapors and splashes when it hits, so it will have disabling effects even if you dont hit the face directly

if your GF is getting attacked, the first priority is to create space between her and attacker and get away. so a stream would be ideal after she steps back or shoves someone and can start running away at the same time as spraying them to slow them down
