any idea what this thing is?

supposedly Syria fired anti-aircraft missiles at Israeli jets, but this looks a lot bigger than anti-aircraft

also,

SAMs vary in size massively. The USSR designed several large SAMs with long range and high altitude capability. Example dimensions:

S-75 (SA-2): 10.6 m long 0.7 m diameter

S-200D (SA-5): 10.8 m long, 0.86 m diameter

S-300 (SA-10) 48N6E2: 7.5 m long, 0.5 m diameter

Syria has had the first two SAMs in its inventory for a long time, while it is hard to get a sense of scale in that photograph, a missile like the S-200D (with fins lost) is around the right size. It is claimed that Russia is going to transfer ownership of some of the S-300 systems it has deployed in Syria (though this has not yet happened).

interesting, thanks for the info
>>

I thought the S-300s were already transferred to the SAA

Yeah wasn't that fucking ages ago?
I could have swore there was some fracas about Russia and Israel butting heads over Russia sending S-300's into Syria.

Does Syria have anything that could damage Israel? Like a nuke? (Sorry if this is retarded question but I am wholly ignorant.)

Yeah, from what I am understanding Russia has spec ops on the ground in Syria too right? So is it possible that Russia and Israel might go to war even as proxies?

yes, and it goes well beyond that;

/pol/ is my home board. we're bros tho, /k/ommandos have been a big help for me several times

anyway, imo ISIS is plausible deniability. it allows Russia to attack American backed rebels and say they're attacking ISIS; allows us to do the reverse, etc.

and then there are actual Islamists who identify as ISIS, especially in Europe. it's a cluster

I don't know how Israel fits in exactly; probably more of the same (plausible deniability) when in reality their real concerns are the Syrian regime, Hezbollah, Iran, etc.

It's hard to tell from the perspective the length, which is what would give the best idea. While the total length of an Arrow is around 7 m, around half of that is the booster section, which detaches after it burns out.

If that segment is around ~3.5 m, I would say there is a good chance it is an Arrow booster section.
>>
>>33334841
>So is it possible that Russia and Israel might go to war even as proxies?
No. Netanyahu personalli flew to Moscow to make a deal about Syria. Israil has carte blanche in their actions against Hezbolla, Russia keeps Iran and Assad from escalation and Israil does not interfiere with Russian and Syrian missions against IS and Syrian opposition. Russian forces do not shoot in IDF planes over Syria, IDF does not fire in Russian planes who accidently crosses Israil border Turkey-style. Because it's a fucking common sence and both sides are capable to blow each other to pieces.

>>33334850
>Russian fighter jets have reportedly fired at Israeli aircraft at least twice
Never happened
>Russian state media reported that Israeli Mossad agents and other foreign military officers were killed in Aleppo on Tuesday in a Russian missile strike
The only Russian "state-media" is Rossiyskaya Gazeta. Sputnik is Al Jazeera tier source.

sputnik is russian state media

>Sputnik (pronounced spʊtnJk) is a news agency, news websites and radio broadcast service established by the Russian government-controlled news agency Rossiya Segodnya.

They have S-300 for quite some time by now though.

There are even talks about S-400.
>>
>>33334820
S-400 is in Syria around the russian airbases, with russian crews and all.

S-300 is in SAA hands. There might still be russian trainers/advisors around, but the majority of the crews should be russian-trained syrians by now.
>>
>>33335252

sauce?

from what I understand, s-300 is still under Russian control too.

eg;

>Russia currently has S-400 and S-300 air-defense systems deployed to protect its troops stationed at the Tartus naval supply base and the Khmeimim airbase.

>He also noted that Syria itself has S-200 as well as BUK systems, and their technical capabilities have been updated over the past year.

>yes but what prompted the bombing?
Israel fears that Hezbollah is getting stronger because of the syrian war.

>i understand that israel hates hezbollah because of hamas, yes?
Because they are butthurt of the 2006 war where they lost to Hezbollah. And yes, because Hezbollah supports Hamas from time to time.

>what is hezbollah doing in syria, and why did assad shoot at the israeli jets?
They joined in 2013 when the government was about to collapse, and have given support since. Hezbollah knows that if the syrian government falls, Lebanon will be next, they will be attacked by ISIS or al Nusra or whichever brand of salafists win.

>also, what will be the consequences of this?
Nothing, this has been happening often, see pic.
>>
>>33334887
The current situation is beneficial to Israeli interests. Syria's a shithole that would take decades to get back to where it was before the civil war, Iran has functionally lost a major ally, and Hezbollah is tied down fighting Islamists. Even if the war suddenly ended tomorrow Israel would still be sitting good for a few years.
>>
>>33336077
>yes but what prompted the bombing?
Israel saw an opportunity to take out a high value target and went for it. It's that simple.

>i understand that israel hates hezbollah because of hamas, yes?
Hamas has nothing to do with this.

>what is hezbollah doing in syria,
Supporting the Assad regime.
>and why did assad shoot at the israeli jets?
Because they violated Syrian air space. Not that it really matters. They have been carrying strikes in Syria for uears now with no problem.

>also, what will be the consequences of this?
Absolutley nothing.

>is israel going to push assad's shit in now?
No.
>>
>The Israeli military said its fighter jets had struck several targets in Syria early Friday, March 17, and were back in Israeli-controlled airspace, when Syria launched several anti-aircraft missiles toward the Israeli jets. Israel’s Arrow air defense missile intercepted one of the missiles, the army said, but would not elaborate on whether any other hostile missiles had struck Israeli territory. The safety of Israeli civilians and the safety of the Israeli aircraft “were not compromised,” the IDF spokesman stressed.

Fuck is even going on right now lel, this could easily escalate into WW3

>this could easily escalate into WW3
Don't get your hopes high.
>>
>>33336886

Not really, Israel has regularly struck inside Syria at things it regards as a threat, and it's an open secret that Syria supplies weapons to groups fighting Israel such as Hezbollah (both on its own volition, and as an Iranian proxy).

It's a game both sides play, with both sides knowing roughly what is and isn't a tolerable escalation.

I'd go wit an option that older SAM's were used on purpose as a warning. On previous attacks nothing was used. Let's see how it develops. After all, S-200 is from the 60's, with new systems I believe it would be a different ball game.

No.

Israel and Russia are on good terms, much better than Russia and the west. Russia lets Israel bomb hezbollah and Iranians in Syria, Israel doesn't interfere with Russian activities. It's a deal they've had for a while. These strikes have happened many times. Just usually Syria doesn't fire back
>>
>>33338974
Israel has destroyed bucks and tors in Syria before. A few S-300 batteries won't keep them away either even if they take some jets with them. Assads only options are to make peace with Israel or hope Russia does something, which isn't likely

I don't buy it. Russia is arming Israel's adversaries - Iran, Syria, Egypt, and Hezbollah.

they have a deal to avoid all-out war for the time being; NATO and Russia have similar arrangements here and there. the overall dynamic is undeniable tho
>>
>>33336045
Official policy of the IDF is to not allow "game changing" weapons transfer to Hizbollah.

They got hit by a c-802 in 2006; the Israelis didn't like it.
