By the way I also have the war journal of my great grandpa on my father's side (previous posts were my mother's father). It's a lot bleaker since he spent almost all the war farming potatoes as a POW in Germany.
He's a bit less educated, a bit older (he already has a wife and kids, my father's father was born at the beginning on the war so he only got to meet his father when he was 4 or 5) and a lot less expressive.
He struggles to convey his feelings and you really have to read between the lines. This makes the feels hit harder too.

Nothing special about the entering in French territory, he was in a train with other liberated POWs and just states it has been 5 years since he left. All he really cared about was his family.

I'll try to translate the very end of his journal but I'm not sure it says a lot without reading the whole thing first. He's harder to translate because his writen French isn't the best in the first place and the crappy photocopies make his handwriting hard to read.

"At last, such joy and such happiness. At the train station I meet my dear wife and my son Clément who were waiting for me, and we take the road home in René Ousselieu's [not sur about his last name] front-wheel drive. He is a former POW from 14-18, who enjoys driving the repatriated home.
After the Reunion with my wife, my dear children and all the family, happy to see me again and in good health, all I have left to do is resume family life, where there are worries but also great joys.

I end this very brief narration of 5 years and 8 monthes of the life of a soldier and prisoner of war, a time which, with its sufferings and hardships, condemns forever War and its consequences."
