For my first gun I was thinking of getting an M1-type model similar to pic related.

What would /k/ recommend?
>>
>>33324640
bad idea unless you're fairly well off, I think they run around $1400
>>
>>33324646
any m1-style rifles that are cheaper than that?
>>
>>33324679

Canadians can get a Norinco M1A for around $400 syrup bux. If you're American, prepare to pay $800+ at least.
>>
>>33324640
M14 is kind of meh. Don't let it be your first gun choice
>>
An M1A would be an ideal first gun, since you can learn to shoot well on one and anything you get later is guaranteed to be a direct upgrade.
>>
>>33324640
if you're just into a .308 semi auto, check out ptr91s, they're slightly more affordable and mars are dirt cheap
>>

>>
>>33324640
Best Rifle eva! You can't go wrong! Get you an LRB or Rock-Ola M14! A medium weight Criterion NM barrel will shoot sub MOA if you have your gun bedded and match conditioned. Jon Wolfe can build you an excellent rifle!
>>
I would recommend an ar-10
>>
>>33325291
308 ARs are cheaper and more accurate
>>
>>33324640
it's shit desu senpai. The Garand is a cooler piece and at least it has the WW2 autism niche/cool factor.
>>
>>33324679
You don't want to go cheaper than Springfield Armory for any M1A type. Will be trash.
>>
>>33324640
Yes, I like mine a lot. It's like a FAL but you don't have to be gay to own one

If you can't afford a M1a (which I am saving up for) you can also look at Ruger mini 14s. I have 2 a 184 and 581. they are good guns and simple enough to maintain. A pre owned mini can be got for around 500 usd and a new one around 750. I own these stocks.
>>
>>33326350
the only Springfield M1A worth buying is the scout squad and even that you'll really have to baby to keep it shooting well.
>>
>>33324640
Just get a Garand or tanker viersion. It's virtually the same and comes with ping.
>>
>>33326227
>>33326246
Good point, forgot those existed for a minute
>>
>>33324886
Norinco M14s are only good if you just want the receiver or simply don't care how bad the rest are.
>>
>>33324640
The M1A is a bit spendy gun/ammo wise for a beginner, also recoils a bit.
You don't want to over-invest on a first firearm because if you decide you don't like it, or simply aren't that into shooting it's a very big chunk of cash you just spent. You can sell it and get most of that back, but it's easier to go cheap in, cheap out.
Also, .308 while good is also expensive and high-recoiling. You can develop bad habits like flinching, which will limit the development of your skills.

So if you have the disposable income and are aware of the flinch issue by all means get one. I'd advise going used and hunting down an older model with surplus USGI parts. You might save money and get a better gun.
>>
>>33324679
Ruger Mini-14. It's an M14 scaled down to 5.56mm using the M1 carbine gas system.

With those I'd advise going used as well. Their MSRP (like 1k or something) is insane for what they are. People sell them used for $400-700.

But before you drop everything to buy one.
1) There are two generations 180-194 serial prefix and 580-583(4?) prefix. These are the first 3 digits of the serial number.
GET THE 580+ SERIAL. The newer ones have thicker barrels that resolved a long overdue issue with thin barrels overheating and whipping. I routinely see new models selling for $650-700 used.
2) If you do get an old model, I advise getting it only if super cheap ($400-500) and putting a barrel strut on it. A stupid solution, but it braces the barrel and makes it kinda look like an M14, which is nice.
3) Also if you find an old model with a flash hider and bayonet lug that says "GB" on it, BUY IT. Those are old police/military only versions that drifted on the civilian market as police trade-ins. They also have thicker barrels and can be a great bargain.
4) Magazines are different from the AR-15 pattern. There's no known easy way to mod the Mini-14 to use a different magazine. Mini-14 magazines are much more expensive than AR mags. We're talking like $30-50 for factory 20-30 rounders. Aftermarket mags are much cheaper, but also very flaky with reliability.
>>
>good bullpup 7.62x51mm rifle never
>>
>>33327301
The only aftermarket mags I trust in my Mini-14 are the ones made by TAPCO.
>>
>>33326870

Yeah, CMP was selling Garands at ~$600 a while ago, I'm not sure how true that is anymore

OP the people recommending it are doing so ironically if you haven't noticed.

The M1A/Mini14/Modern M1 style action isn't really all that useful anymore.

Specifically, M1As are expensive, while not really being all that quality.

While I do enjoy them, I would not pick one as my first rifle.

If you're dead set on .308, which I also recommend you aren't, you should look at AR10 pattern guns like the M&P 10.

It's going to be cheaper and better in every way imaginable to the M1A to be honest.

If you're not teathered to .308, I'd recommend an AR15.

Throw all of this out the window if you don't ever intent on having the rifle for competition or defensive shooting, because, while expensive and sub optimal, the M1A is a perfectly fine range or hunting gun.

I also think they're just cool.

Your first gun

Ok hold up. You're going to want something that you can afford to shoot a lot to practice. .308 is .40-.50 cents a round right now. Can you afford to shoot 500 rounds of that in an afternoon?

If you don't already have marksmanship fundamentals, then get a 10/22 or a 5.56 bolt action. One of those can be had for $400-$500.

An M1A will run you $1000-$1400.

Shoot the smaller gun all day long with some youtube tutorials or at an Appleseed event to get some training.
>>
>>33327301
Also I forgot if you get a 580+ serial Mini-14 and it has a factory rear sight, it's garbage, replace it immediately. Tech sights makes a very good one for $75.
>>33327283
The receivers are not even that good. Sure they're forged, but not always in spec which is far more crucial. Also, they have been known to be too brittle and crack.
That said, USUALLY they're fine, but I would definitely not go out of my way and pay a premium for one.
>>33326870
Garands are also a viable option. Can be had for $800-1k if you look around. Condition can vary though.
>>33326855
That's absolutely not true. The only M1As you have to baby are ones tuned for serious match shooting.
As a system, the M14 is very poorly suited for serious accuracy tuning such as bedding/free float/etc. and when that's done in order to tune the groups down to sub-1 MOA it takes a LOT of dickering to keep it there.
But if the out of the box accuracy is good enough (for most purposes it is) and it's left stock then it will happily stay there as the gun is used and to some extent even abused. I've literally run 1,500 rounds through one over multiple trips, drops, stock changes and excursions into unhealthy environments without cleaning it once and it remained reliable and just as accurate as it started. That is to say, about 2-3 MOA which a lot of people would sneer at but in my hands was perfectly adequate.

>>33327339
The larger bullet and extra power of the .308 isn't going to do you any good if you can't hit anything. That's why you want to practice on the smaller stuff.

Once you have your fundamentals down (i.e. you can hit a man sized target at 400 yards without thinking), go nuts with the larger stuff.

I have an M1A and I love the thing to death. AR10s are better if you want modern controls and handling. But M1As have /aesthetic/

For me gun purchases are all about ammo availability in a RAHOWA/SHTF scenario.

So that's 9mm, 223, and 22.

>>
>>33330895
Say it isn't so anon. It seems like most of the stuff that JRA has put out has been pretty decent, why is this one shitty?
>>
>>33330958
Forced matched parts kit guns built on cast receivers from dodgy sources, shortcuts made with production causing issues.

The bolt stop window is cut out incorrectly on most receivers, which causes malfunctions, The bolt stop will interfere with easy magazine insertion and makes quick mag swaps nearly impossible.

Magazines need to be modified by had to force fit them to the mag catch, extra Magazines are 40 bucks a pop if you mess up.

The oprod track on the receivers are too wide and can cause the oprod to pop off mid magazine.

They are modified garands with none of the improvements of the M14 gas system or bolt.
>>
>>33327339
This, everyone who wants to shoot rifles should start with a .22. If you have an interest in hunting it's also ideal for small game.
>>
>>33331112
>cast receivers from dodgy sources

That's disappointing and surprising. I figured they would be forged like their m14 clones.
