Just put my first AR build together today, took it out to the range and it short cycles.....

Sometimes it cycles far enough to eject a casing but won't chamber the next round, it just closes on an empty chamber. Other times it won't even cycle open far enough to eject a casing and will jam. It doesn't ever cycle far enough back to engage the bolt-hold-open mechanism on the last round either.

Bolt carrier group slides very easily in the upper receiver, the buffer weight and spring aren't bound up, I've put my finger in the chamber to block off the barrel and can blow air down the gas tube. I'm new to ARs and don't know what I should try first at this point.

I was going to swap my upper onto a friend's working AR with his BCG to see if it's an issue with my upper not letting enough gas through and then swap in my BCG if the upper worked on his gun to test that afterwards but I won't be able to do that until this weekend. What else should I look at / test before then?

So yes small ammo, at least in my eyes. I've yet to shoot it so what the hell do I know. I did have this happen a few times now. I put the magazine in and charge it. It feels a bit stiff so I wanted to work out the entire magazine. Every 7-11 rounds though this happens.

Is it just a lack of proper lubricant, walking the bolt back too slowly, or are these designed to be forcibly ejected by the gases of the bullet in the pipe?
