I use a fleck parka for snowboarding because it was only $20 and it works better than my $500 3 layer goretex burton jacket. I've worn it during a blizzard with nothing but two shirts on underneath and was completely fine. The only thing I don't like about it is the stiff hood. I remember when I worked at a ski resort in Colorado, they sold jackets just like this in one of the "skateboarder" shops. Shit you not, same cut, same material, same camo, but something insane like $100 dollars. I think it was some hip brand's version of it.

No idea if it was considered cool or not, it sat there in the window all season, but I guess it's part of the stoner trash snowboarder culture or something as well. They had lots of clothes in there that were clearly military inspired with the cuts and design.

As for wearing milsurp in public? No, I never would, at least not in town. I'm picking up a surplus czech parka for range time and general woods activity, but that's because I like czech stuff and have a much nicer jacket that I don't want to get hoppes and lead dust on. Cheap, found everywhere in various sizes for neckbeards of all shapes. It's effective, looks cool, and it's German quality. The cut for the uniforms also got neat little features like vents under the armpits which is nice. The fabric is also super comfy almost silky. I wish my ACU's felt this good.

I never mentioned stolen valor. Also, as an older vet who was actually issued an M-65 and now owns and DPM Windproof Smock, buy one. Shit's amazing, even better than the goretex I was issued toward the end of my career. It breathes while staying windproof and moderately rain proof, and it works better for layering. It's toastie with a fleece baselayer under it.
