Do laser activated claymores exist in real life or are they just a videogames thing?

i checked many army claymore videos and they all see to use the claymores with a detonator

can you nig-rig a laser Det into a claymore?
>>
>>33259582

any mine that can be set off by an errant leaf is not a good mine.
>>
>>33259582
You hide the fucking explosive with shrub and twigs so it wont get detected until its too late. You detonate it either by hand or tripwire (which are outlawed by cuck treaties that most countries that play war didnt sign)
>>
>>33259582
Army is bound by treaties to not use autonomous mines.
Now, whether they actually use it...

They don't.

>Set up defensive perimeters around a dozen different fobs over five years.

Generally speaking we try to avoid blowing up kids and livestock. Waste of money.
>>
>>33259582
It's a video game meme.

It exists because people conflated trip mines with trip lasers (because it's more "advanced" then a physical wire) so the origin of the laser claymore, and the constant presence of them in games, is 100% logical - especially when you factor in overall game design
>>
>be infinity Ward
>Add claymore to game
>oh fuck programming the trip wires is hard
>code an Autodeploy of wires in front of the mine
>Playtesters can never see the wires
>claymores have no real counter
>remove wires and replace with fluorescent red lines for the sake of quick fix to get the game in shape for release
>Everyone now thinks claymores are laser mines
>>
>>33259604
>kids and livestock
Basically this. Cambodia and Laos are depressing as fuck for that reason.

>be poorest group of people in an already third world country
>be kid, can't afford food

>>
>>33259658
Dude, laser claymores have been a thing since at least metal gear solid in the 1990's.
>>
>>33259680
It was also done by Duke Nukem and Half-Life
>>
>>33260199

half life's mines were more like laser-triggered N-gages
>>
Has there ever been a videogame where tripwire claymores were accurately depicted? I can think of countless games with laser tripmines and a few (like Raven shield) that show it with clackers, but none off the top of my head that use a physical wire.
>>
>>33260211
Yeah but they were vaguely claymore shaped, even had the FRONT TOWARDS ENEMY text on it's model somewhere I think.
>>
>>33259582

The point of adding lasers to claymores is so that when you walk through the lasers, the lasers cut your legs off and then your stumpy corpse falls on the tripwire that activates the claymore.
>>
>>33259596
Plenty of country that are part of Ottawa treaty still maintain stockpiles of claymores because of loopholes

it could be viable and for all we know there might be special purpose models designed just for that

but its not the kinda thing you want to use outdoors in an uncontrolled setting
>animals, kids

Its the kinda thing you put inside (like in video games) and you'd keep the beam IR so it couldnt normally be seen.

If you really dont want someone going down a hallway, if you know the only reason they'd be there is because they're an infiltrator then yeah you definitely want some shit like this. Because it makes a hell of an alarm system too and you know you're under attack (time to check all the Other entrances).

> James Bond and Alias shit, but it was played faithfully in Half Life.

And the advantage of this over a motion detector is you know exactly where to put the beam. If you did happen to have something like a big juicy rat crawl along it might set off a motion detector.

Also per strict instructions the beam can be avoided whereas a motion detector just hits a whole area.
>>
>>33259631
>>33259680

It's actually gameplay and balancing mechanics.

The laser both helps the user set up the mine while the target has a chance of seeing the mine before stepping on it. The laser also explained why you weren't bothering with a tripwire.

Laser tripwires are actually a bad idea. They're too sensitive and can be seen if there's enough dust.

anti tank mines are generally designed with countermeasures, since its kind of a waste to use AT-grade boom on a random GI. sure it will turn a person to paste, but thats overkill. Many have magnets or heavy weight triggers that a person cant set off.

an antipersonnel mine is generally designed to maim, since traumatic, mutilating injuries and evaccing wounded can eat up more resources than a straight death. They are placed often in places humans go, particularly along paths. Since they are small and cheap they may get placed in abundance, and their nature makes them a common subcomponent of traps. 100% complete removal is hard, expensive, and can even be virtually impossible if the field is lost (imagine setting up mines in a desert, then theres a sandstorm and all the dunes changed; where did the mines all go?).

people always say "faggy treaties" but there a lot of good reasons to not fuck with antipersonnel mines.
>>
>>33262572
Finland tried to some time ago
>>
>>33260355
project reality. they're deadly but situational. commanded detonated, and lethal out to 25m, wounding to about 35. if you place them in the right direction, you can lock an area down, but all the enemy has to do is go around them to counter them.

personally in the game I prefer insurgent IEDs. the danger of harming teammates is less important than having a 360 degree kill radius. but claymores certainly can kill from farther away.
>>
weapons with proximity fuses have been around for a long time. basically mines with radio waves......
>>
>>33262991
>have the spawn location order memorized
>proxy mine the spawns
>kill your buddy
>respawn into a proxy mine
>you
>you're running around, re-mining the spawn locations
>no more mines in inventory, just stand near the spawn location so that it gets skipped, buddy spawns onto the next mined location
>20 kill streak

I played the fuck out of that game, holy shit.

...

Anti personnel mines are banned, but trip flares with an LMG ready to go can *basically* do the same thing, and as a massive bonus the tripflare *probably* isn't going to kill someone even if you're a retard and forgot it.

Laser trip systems consist of a projecting laser and corresponding sensor. Breaking the beam isn't exactly what sets them off, just no input on the sensor.

This is a complex, fiddly system. It works in some fixed applications, but even most banks just use motion sensors.

It's daft on a claymore because you'd be blowing up precision expensive equipment and some dirt or a something could block the sensor and blow it up.

Not to mention you'd need to power it constantly. Unlike a one time charge from a clacker.
