How does the empire, after getting BTFO at Endor and having like half the galaxy celebrate their defeat, somehow manage, in their diminished resources and control, to make a superweapon superior to the death stars? I mean, its beam is presumably faster than light, or at least as fast, and it can branch out and destroy multiple planets in other systems you'd barely be able to see. I'm afraid to see what they come up with in the next movies, because they gotta up the stakes and escalate it.

What next, a gun that can kill a galaxy in one shot?

the weapon is far more impressive than the Death Stars, they essentially terraformed an entire planet to such an extent that there is no in-universe precedent and converted it into a ridiculously-massive superweapon.
