What can /k/ teach me about the AC-130?
My expertise is with WWII-era aircraft, and I'm trying to learn more about modern aircraft.
>>
>>33255127

It's altogether pretty simple

Standard AC-130 airframe, 4 turboprop engines

Guns come out the side.

Only the gunners have thermals, commander has standard night vision.

What model? They very quiet a lot. The newest ones are pretty much a flying kebab Holocaust. I won't answer any sensitive or classified shit, but if you want to know a little about it your going to need to be a little more specific.
>>
>>33255264

It goes really fast and it holds an ungodly number of JDAMs.
>>
>>33257675
how many kebabs have you personally removed
>>
>>33255127
It's like the Flying Fortress got modernized.
>>
>>33255127
Could you imagine if /k/ owned a C130 and a hanger with a strip to house one?

Someone would try to /k/ommando airborne drop and at least 2/3rd would fuck it up. I can hear the radio tower laughing from here
>>
>>33255127
Its the best 11 kill streak perk.
Running pred missile into harrier with calymores to drop as you move is almost guaranteed AC130 in under 2 mins on each map if you have good routes

The basic concept comes from an improvised weapon developed during Vietnam. Somebody came up with the idea of cutting some holes in the cargo door of a C-47 and sticking a bunch of 30 caliber machine guns through them. In a shocking and rare move, USAF brass looked at a cheap, practical idea that somebody came up with and went with it. An upgraded version of the AC-47 used three GAU-11 gun pods instead of the 30 cals. The idea worked so well that they decided to try extending the concept by putting bigger guns in a bigger airplane, so they took a couple squadrons worth of C-119s and converted those. The third generation of gunship was made from the first of the AC-130s, which came online toward the end of Vietnam and were very high tech for their time. We're now on, I think, the third iteration of the AC-130.

It's metal as fuck
also it's just a cargo plane with a bunch of guns poking out of one side, same as the AC-47 gunship before it, only that used a reflex sight that the pilot used, and steered the plane accordingly. Today, gunners control each gun separately to the whole fucking craft doesn't have to change course to move the point of aim
>>
>>33257675

do the people you are shooting at even know where you are or where the bullets are coming from?

it never seems like they do in guncam videos
>>
>>33257758
I maintain the weapons. I don't get to fly with the air crew.
>>33258392
Usually not at first, but if any of them survive the fist shot they usually get up to speed on whats going on real quick. Not that it does them much good. The 30 mm bushmaster and the griffin missiles are fucking scalpels. Plus now we're getting the 105 back plus GBU-39's and hell fires. It's really not even close to a fair fight. They can dish out precision fuck you than the haji's know what do with. They would be at least as scared of it as they are of the drones if any of them ever lived to tell the tail.
>>
>>33259220
what's the current weapons spec for them? most renditions have the 25mm (?) vulcan, the 40mm bushmaster, and the 105 bofors, and that's it.
are the new variants getting the 105, vulcans, a 40mm, griffin missiles, hellfires, and gbu-39s, all at the same time?
fucking christ that's insane

what is there other than flares and shit to protect them? the C130 platform isn't exactly stealthy.
>>
>>33259236
It depends on the series. I can't give you exact specifics Like load-outs and configurations. This is the closest to ours that I could find that doesn't say anything that will get me in trouble.

Obsoleye, slow, big fat flying coffin in all but the most permissive situations. And in such permissive situations, cheaper alternatives already exist.

>>33259220
is this really a cost effect method of kebab removal? wouldnt it be much cheaper overall if we just prevented their population from reproducing? just spray shit on their food supply to sterilize them
>>
>>33255127
Overrated, primarily because it is limited to permissive airspace (where nothing could even conceivably shoot at it, which actually means it doesn't even fly during daytime). However, if it's in a situation where it can actually do work, by God, does it do work.

Honestly, if you want to learn more about modern aircraft, ignore the AC-130 entirely. It's a niche aircraft, and you won't learn much of anything about modern airpower through study of it.
>>
>>33259364
It's definitely not the most cost efficient platform, but the capabilities it brings to the table is unmatched.
>>
>>33259364
The USA already tried that during vietnam

Agent orange, look it up

Fun fact about that scene. That's an old 1969 H model. It was supposed to be a U model but because U models are giant hunks of trash and they couldn't get up to shoot the scene the H model took it from them.

What is hot/jammed response kit?
>>
>>33260219
Hot or jammed gun.
>>
>105mm Howitzer
>40mm Bofors (because we probably still have ammo from WWII laying around in a depot somewhere)
>25mm Gatling Gun
>New ones have PGMs

If you don't have anything other than SA-7s, ZPUs or ZSUs for air defense, I'd imagine they are absolutely horrifying.

This guy knows. 130's are a prime example of the boots doing the work knowing what to do not suits in Washington

Cheaper options? Not with that firepower and that adaptability. You got another way to get a 120mm artillery in the air?

It has the special tools to clear the guns if there is a jam or malfunction. Its an emergency response kit. You see if they can't clear any of the guns it generates a ground emergency. Nobody but a ac130 weapons shop would have one and it's not classified or secret in any way. I wanted to post proof without posting something that would compromise opsec or get me in trouble.
