Going back a lot of years here, but when I was in high school in rural IL things were pretty GOAT.

I built a hedge (osage orange) selfbow in shop, walked through the front door with an axe and splitting maul on one shoulder and a 7' hedge log on the other and didn't even get strange looks. Everybody hunted, so at any given time there were probably 70 shotguns in the wall lockers. School was 100% white, county was 100% white, there was no violent crime period, the meth problem hadn't become a problem yet, and the few potheads we had kept to themselves and smoked on their own time without delving into the "weed culture" and as such were left the fuck alone by law enforcement.
