I do fully understand your reasoning and I will freely admit they are outliers. So far to date pretty much every religion has had a sub-sect of crazies that do shit like this, and I don't think it really reflects poorly on the religion as a whole since it is so rare.

I would equate it to, say, Protestantism and Westboro Baptist Church. Subsect of crazies giving the rest a black eye.
