What is the smallest handgun caliber you would ethically feel comfortable for shooting deer?

I worked with a guy who used an old Marlin 917 as his food gun.

What size of deer are we speaking of?

I've seen a .454 with premium hunting ammo have a catastrophic failure on a small-ish deer.

My cousin's shot placement was perfect but the slug didn't expand properly and spun out the front of the neck. Turned one lung to pulp but didn't hit anything else vital.

We had to track this deer for several miles in the dark, we could hear its sucking chest wound gurgling while it tried to run.

Ended up putting it down with a rifle anyway when we found it.

I probably wouldn't hunt deer with a handgun.

I wouldn't. I'm nogunz and don't know how to hunt.

But according to the armchair ballistics experts on /k/, as far as calibers go penetration is the only thing that matters and wound channel width is irrelevant, so I guess I'd say 7.62x25mm Tokarev since it'll go 37" in ballistics gel.

Some hot loaded .357 JHP through a lever gun

handguns are not for hunting deer
You can get a 12ga or savage .308 for cheaper than most handguns anyway

Did you report him for poaching? Its not the 1930s anymore, the depression is over.

One of the Elmer Keith books I read he talks about a buddy of his that would hunt mule deer with a 9mm luger he carried on a lanyard around his neck. Get close enough and shoot well enough and a .22 will work.

(in case of sudden flaccid just choke up)

Ethical? Whats the circumstance?

SHTF I'd kill them with a tire iron if I had to. .22 hollow points will take down a deer. I actually saw a guy put down a wounded fawn with a tire iron once. Moped rider hit a fawn on a country highway (it was a moped rally). Local farmer (I assume) stopped and beat its brains in with a tire iron then slung it into his truck. The whole thing was surreal. The girl who hit it with her moped was OK but her front forks were fucked.

Nowadays like run of the mill deer hunting? I wouldn't feel good about anything with less killing power than a 45.

My grandfather grew up on a farm in Wisconsin during the depression. Said he only saw two deer in his whole life before he left for WWII even though they went hunting all the time.

He and his brother used to kill doves/pidgeons/rabbits/ whatever with slingshots they made themselves.

Grandad flew a P47 and great uncle helped reverse engineer German subs.

I was born in the wrong time anons.

I shot a wounded deer with a 38 special from a snub nose at about 15 feet. It got up to run and I put two through it.
When it went back down I had assumed that my two shots finished it off. When we later skinned the animal we had found that both rounds had went into the animal approx. 3/4ths of an inch.

Me and my construction buddies are on the job at first light. We see road hit deer all the time. Put them down with a good old Estwing framing hammer 4 or 5 a year between the three of us.

Shot a spike at 20 yards with a 12ga rifled slug. Saw a black hole open up behind his elbow on his body, right where you're supposed to shoot for vitals. Nothing but a bit of fur on the ground. No blood trail. Looked for him all day. Hope you're alright, little guy.

Assuming range isn't a factor. I would say 9mm.

I hunt whitetail with a .22 short, usually at distances of +150m.

They typically go down after around 3000 rounds
