Shotguns are probably some of the most common guns in the world, and for good reasons.
They are the best gun a man can own for his real life needs. Can either bring food, even small game/birds or kill any game or threat you may encounter in life by using the right ammo.
No one is in denial that shotguns will ever be obsolete.
You wouldn't have a tool box without a big hammer, would you?

QUICK RUNDOWN ON WHY SHOTGUNS ARE GOAT (12 Ga.; for other calibers the following or may not apply)
Inexpensive, simple mechs, easy to operate and very reliable
Still one of the most powerful guns out there for its use
Quality all-rounder shotguns with chrome lined barrel and changeable chokes are one size fits all guns lasting a lifetime
Can go from sporting and hunting pieces to tactical combat guns. Pick your flavour.
At the top of the flexibility rating: from a cloud of pellets for bird, to various sizes of shot and buckshot, up to a big, fat slug of over .70 caliber; and that's excuding "exotic" loadings. Only a knife probably would be more flexible in a man's life
Real life accurate at least up to 100 yards with slugs, still good for defence and hunting
Ammo is plentiful, cheap and common all over the world; can be even hand loaded with far less skill and equipment compared to pistol and rifle ammo. Common handgun powders can be used for most shotshell loads
Option to make cut shells (improvised slug) - no other weapon can do that by just cutting a round
CONS
Bulkiness and weight of the ammo: a box of 25/12 Ga. s can be filled with over 200 rounds of 9mm
Low to medium tube/magazine capacity. Most of them will be in the range of 5-10 rounds, and generally are far slower than other guns to reload.
Very loud report, stout recoil compared to other guns due to the sheer weight of the shot charge, notably in 12Ga. A 1oz. round is fires the weight equivalent of 3 7,62x39 rounds at the same time.
No penetration of hard targets with conventional ammo.

Discuss here those hand cannons!

Literally no reason to exist. Low-recoil 12ga ammo is more widely available and cheaper than 20ga shells. So 20 gauge is purely a subset.

Maybe if 20 gauge shotguns were hundreds of dollars cheaper, it would make sense to buy one.

A 7/8oz 12ga load actually kicks significantly less than a 7/8oz 20ga load of the same velocity because it's lower pressure and (generally) uses less powder to achieve the same velocity, due to the larger bore diameter.

And this is regardless of firearm weight, I've tested this with 7/8oz loads through my skeet set (lightweight carrier barrel with weight-matched subgauge tubes so it's the exact same shotgun weighing the exact same down to fractions of an ounce in 12, 20, 28, and .410).
>>
>>33210840
Reminder, 16 guage is best gauge. Just uncommon.
>>
>>33211030
Does the exact same thing as a heavy load 20ga (1oz of shot at anywhere from 1180fps to 1350fps) while requiring a larger frame. While being significantly less versatile since they never developed heavier or lighter loads for it (there's no 7/8, 3/4, 1 1/8oz loads or 3" versions).

It's obsolete for a reason.
>>
>>33210997

>>
>>33211058
Smooth barrel is far and away the most versatile. Shot, all types of slugs (including sabot, with a rifled choke), buck, cut-shells, homemade bullshit, smoothbore does it all.

Single most versatile offering Mossberg has is the 535 Turkey and Waterfowl Combo. 22" and 28" smoothbore ventrib barrels, 5+1 of 3.5" shells, takes all 500 accessories, includes a bunch of choke tubes including turkey extra full. Kind of expensive though, same tier as the 590.
>>
>>33210649

Just because you have a singular tool that does everything well enough that doesn't mean it's strictly the best at all specific tasks. A precision rifle can reach farther, an AR/AK can hold more rounds and effectively hold off a group, and a pistol you can carry with you on a regular day to day basis without drawing attention. Shut the fuck up with your absolutes, sith!

Used shotguns don't really have the same problems as used rifles, particularly since you don't have to worry about worn rifling. As long as it functions it's g2g.

I've bought s 50-year-old and s 20-year-old Mossberg 500 used from pawnshops and both are fantastic, with the added bonus of having completely broken-in actions. Shit's like butter compared to my new-production Mav-88, and they were both sub-$150.

My record is 3 fist sized targets at 5-10 yards varied, with lateral spacing of 3-5 yards.

In 1.2 seconds. Faster than most people could pull that off with a semi-auto handgun.

With a 12 gauge Remington 870.

i mean if you like wood furniture maybe

the maverick 88 is essentially the exact same gun except no tang safety, it has a crossbar safety which lends itself better to pistol grips. also the forend is more annoying to replace, but you can do it. and it's like $180 new, so measure that how you will
>>
If shotguns are so great. Why did the double barrel musket not make it past the shotgun/musket split stage?

Clearly theres a design limitation here
>>
>>33216179
Your only record was getting fisted 3 times in 12 seconds.
>>
>>33216179
And you could have pulled that off even faster or at a longer distance with a 20 gauge, what's your point?
>>
>>33216231

It did, though. Double-barreled muzzle-loading shotguns were in common enough usage by irregular troops in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, And Civil War, and though not double-barreled, a number of rifles used in the Civil War were later converted to shotguns by the populace.

To claim that it's the best weapon in the world would be a long shot, but a shotgun is certainly a fine weapon. For the not-a-gun-enthusiast who isn't going to spend more than a day every few months practicing at the range, a shotgun is a fine choice. Most home defense situations aren't some movie-tier high-speed low-drag shootout, it's "bang, schlock, maybe a bang again"

Look at the number of successful home defense shootings pulled off with them by the less than well-trained. It's an attractive option for many, because a 12 or 20 gauge pump can be had for rarely much more than 200 OTD with no mags or complex cleaning knowledge needed. A box of shells is enough to get basically capable and a few rounds of buck shows you your adjustment rate and then you're in the ballpark.

But it is what it is.

Mossberg, H&R, Remington, etc sure aint going broke.

>Yes you can, people do it all the time you just need to practice

>>
>>33216328

Funny you should mention that, because my buddy, who is not far behind me as a shooter only managed 1.7 seconds with his 20 gauge. I've been shooting 12 gauge since I was 12, I've put thousands and thousands of rounds through them. Why I would switch to a lesser weapon is beyond me.

>>
>>33216488

12 gauge has

>better shot density at longer ranges
>better ammo availability and pricing
>wider range of commercially available ammo
>more power, which while negligible, matters at range

I never said it was the gun's fault, I'm saying that I'm good with a 12 gauge shotgun just like I'm good with anything.

I could probably get a better time on an El Presidente drill with an over-built .380 ACP than I get with my 9x19, but does it matter if my time is already better than most and I have a 9mm already?

I'm not anti-20ga in the least but you seem like you're either emotionally invested or shitposting. 12ga puts out more pellets per shot at a higher velocity for a given load.
It's a question of volume-of-fire and frankly 20ga isn't THAT different in felt-recoil than 12ga and is sometimes worse due to lighter, smaller guns.

I remember reading an account from a tunnel rat in Vietnam, about an old 4-gauge shotgun he managed to source. I'm paraphrasing but he said something like; 'it blew your ears out every time you fired the four-gauge, but if there was absolutely anything at all in front of you, you'd hit it'.
>>
>>33213525
They are not chrome lined. Yes, it comes with 2 barrels.

Chrome lining doesn't make any difference on longevity of a smoothbore shotgun barrel, they should last hundreds of thousands of rounds before there's any noticeable erosion even with an unlined bore. Some are chrome lined though, for the added corrosion resistance and ease of cleaning. Some are even black chrome lined for aesthetics (namely the older SKB O/U's, which are pretty affordable now). I personally wouldn't base my shotgun selection on whether it has a chromed bore or not, it's so far down the priority list for me.
>>
I used to own a Mossberg 500 (basic/cheap model) but sold it years ago, so my shotgun knowledge is limited to that and some trap shooting on friends guns.

I'm thinking about re-filling that void in my collection. I always liked shooting slugs and door breachers (just a satusfying feeling).

So, my question is, what kind of setup should I bee looking for in a slug shotgun? I have plenty of home defense so this will mainly be a fun gun for weekend gravel pits.

For slugs should I seek a rifled barrel? Are tubefed magazines better feeding for slugs? Give me a primer while I google.
>>
>>33217618
Rifled barrels are designed specifically for sabot slugs (although they also work with Foster-style/"rifled" slugs). I would avoid if you intend to shoot anything other than sabot slugs through it. Further, most rifled barrels have cantilever scope mounts and preclude the use of iron sights.

Most of your cheap slugs are rifled/Foster slugs. They seem to do best with an improved cylinder or skeet choke, so I would recommend getting something with interchangeable chokes. This will generally exclude most of your 18.5" barrels as the majority of them are fixed cylinder bore.

Ones I would recommend would be a Winchester SXP HD model, 500 Tactical, or 870 Slughunter. There's a Mav 88 slug gun with a smoothbore barrel that has iron sights as well, think it's a 24" barrel, but I can't remember if it has removable chokes or not.
>>
>>33217414
>shotguns shells are stupid expensive
Under $5 a box of 25 is "stupid expensive" to you? That's squarely in the middle of steel-cased intermediate rifle ammo and cheaper than most .45acp per round.

Yes, just as with literally every other projectile ever, specialty ammunition like magnum loads, slugs, etc command a premium. Who'dathunkit rite?

>>

>Smooth barrel is far and away the most versatile.

This Anon is correct. Smoothbore with screw-in chokes will do damn near everything.
The problem with a rifled barrel is that shot patterning suffers (the spin spreads the shot out into a ring, which sounds cool but actually isn't), and certain types of ammo are simply not safe to shoot through it.
Rifled and / or aerodynamic shells out of a smoothbore still have perfectly passable accuracy out to a hundred yards or so, so the smooth barrel is far and away the superior choice.

12 gauge with a 50-round helical drum magazine when?
>>
>>33214051

Mossberg's all right Anon, but IMO a Remington 870 is better.
See that little black lump on the back of the shotgun, just about where the black metal frame curves to meet the wooden shoulder stock?
That's a thumb slide safety, and they're prone as hell to breaking on that model of shotgun.
I personally own one, and know two other people who have, and on all three guns, it broke.
Mine's STILL broken, because it's my home defense shotgun and fuck it.

Also, I've had slide rail and extractor breakage issues with the Mossberg that I never had with the Remington.

Shoots fine though. *shrug*

I've heard the same, Anon, but have no firsthand experience with one to back it up.
Everyone I've talked to said that Saiga is only good after you double your already expensive purchase with a shit-ton of aftermarket parts - then they get badass.
Until then, they're kinda crap.
Secondhand information, so take that as you will.
>>
>>33224567

Kind of wonky. It's a solution in search of a problem.
The bullpup form-factor isn't the end-all, be-all of shotguns. Useful in some situations, sure, but not as fantastic as the marketing would lead you to believe.
Also, it doesn't load or shoot like a regular shotgun. For me, that's an issue - I have years of regular Remington and Mossberg reflexes drilled in.
I suppose if it was your first and only shotgun it might be okay... but it's also too new for there to be a large volume of reliability info on it, and that's another concern I have.
I wouldn't buy one, but that's just me.
>>
Are used Remington 870 Police Magnum worth buying? I was offered one with a m4 style adjustable stock in acceptable condition with no rust and shiny bore, just slightly beat up looking, for $275.

I bulk buy heavy 00B royal all day. Gives satisfaction of recoil, power of blast, and a nice radius. Using birdshot for practice is like training for 7.62 with .22lr. You want to practice with the ammo you're GOING TO USE before actually using in a "tactical" scenario. And FFS, do some fucking research before posting "muh slugs/buck $1 a round!!"

Only if you consider getting punched by a 3rd grade girl "blunt force trauma" because that's about the energy transfer through armor a magnum slug has.

Either load my own (20, 28, .410) or wait for sales at the big-box stores when I can get Gun Clubs for $4.29 a box.

Ammoseek/wikiarms/gunbot for buckshot.

Guess what it is. I can find ammo for it all day long. Even walmart carries it if I'm willing to spend $14 a box for AA's.

I'll probably just wait a few years then, price goes down, more reviews and then make a decision.

Costs less per box than the cheapest Walmart 12ga shells. Your $500 progressive press pays for itself in 10 rounds of sporting clays.

Hey I wanted to say thanks to the anon who told me about the deal he got on buckshot yesterday at walmart.

I got 30rds of buck for 24$ not the greatest deal in the world but decent.

I now stand strong on
250 bird
45 buck
20 1oz slugs
5 Hornady sabots

I'm really lacking on shotgun ammo, I miss when they had super big deals on buck shot when the saiga 12 came out.
