.223 is a very poor round for deer. It's also illegal to hunt deer in Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Virginia, Ohio, New Jersey, Washington, and West Virginia with .223

In my experience, and everyone I've talked to that has taken deer with 5.56, it's a perfectly adequate round for deer within 100 yards. If you don't live in those states, an AR15 can serve as a deer rifle very well.

.223 is the go to in aus for shooting kangaroos out to 300m. Which are basically just vertical boxing deer. Anyone who says otherwise is either a fudd or entirely inexperienced. Are there better rounds? Yes. But .233 is fine providing you choose the right bullet
