I participated in stuff that are literal war crimes. I was 18 and it was encouraged at the time. This is 2005-08, when I was in combat deployments. I worked at a prison accredited wth creating isis and that place messed with be the most. I did things that normal people would scream monster about.

None of it fucked with me until I started to hit my mid 20's and started thinking about it. I drank to cope for a while. Drank a pint to a fifth every night.

My last deployment in 2012 we weren't really doing any patrols and had way too much downtime. Was having vodka sent to me at that time. Managed to never get in trouble for booze either. Anyway, that deployment my military working dog died, the k9 I'd been with for years. After that happened something broke in my mind. I started going through a divorce and shit seemed hopeless.

I was with my ex for eight years and had confided in her and told her about iraq years prior. She used it like a weapon during the break up and kept saying I was a pos human etc.

Was alone, all my friends were dead or separated, felt like shit all around and decided to call it a life. My buddy pushed for me to get help. Him and his wife would show up at my house or anytime I was alone. They kept me from doing it because they were always around.

So yeah, dear diary.

Do it all over again 100%. I loved it I ended getting medically retired but it had nothing to do with mental health shit. I started having problems with my lungs around the end of 2012, it started in 2010 but got progressively worse.

The military quietly acknowledged it was from burn pits and separated me. I get 100% va for that and other shit. I'm on a bunch of inhalers and meds and have to go in monthly for a long term study they're doing on guys who have long term exposure to burn pits.

I'd love to push a dog again more than anything and feel like that was the best job on the planet.

I'm not mad about any of the stuff I did. I had to see a psych and therapists and meet with other guys that have some feelings of guilt and what not. It took time but I'm alright with everything and miss the k9 world.

When you get old and sick plus whatever physical damage you accumulated your life WILL be fucking horrible AND pain meds are NOT a fun replacement. I smoke weed to rest at night because I'm permanently sleep deprived (spinal damage and deterioration) and pharmaceutical sleeping pills are far worse than useless. The most benign pain med in my case is oxymorphone but everyone's different. I don't abuse it because if it ever stops working my life will be unusable. Pain is one thing, but sleep dep from pain is totally destructive.

If your body supports you long enough you will lose your mind instead. Dementia is not fun. I cared for my elderly parents and I'm not gonna stick around that long.

All suicide does is grieve survivors. It's no loss to the dead who no longer exist to feel. (No nervous system, no feels, end of story.) Social taboo against suicide stems from desire to force others to affirm one's own life by maintaining a body long after it's no longer useful to the owner.

I enlisted in 1981 when the Volunteer Force under Reagan (Rumsfeld helped built it earlier in his first SecDef tour and should be credited) when it rose phoenix-like from the ashes of the Hollow Force conscription era.

I'm nearly the only post-draft vet I know of who is aware of how bad shit really got during the late draft era. The Left and Right both prefer different narratives today. That's fucked up. More Americans should study that era whose memory has disappeared from history like inconvenient Soviets were retouched out of official photos.

Younger Americans should get a full picture of how bad conscription was in practice before approving it. Not to say conscripts didn't serve well, but conscription is insanely expensive and training a rotating pool of the unwilling means their experience and skills leave when their hitch is up.

Depressants don't fix shit. As ya get older you'll lose more friends who drank themselves to death. Smoke weed instead if civilian. People don't tend to rage on cannabis and it frequently moderates the vile side effects of pharmaceuticals (all kinds).
