Historical markings are not typically ground off by enthusiasts but by the countries that used to own them before they release them on the surplus market. National crests in particular are often removed before outside sale as a matter of national pride.

There's no way I could have stopped my grandfather from doing what he did. All I know is that he shipped back at least twenty guns in 1945 (all with the green import marks) and removed all the swasticas himself. This includes his preban MGs. Shit happens, and it's just part of history now.

That said my grandpa was also a fudd who destroyed my uncles MAC pistol when they were banned, because he didn't want a "nigger gangster gun" in his home.
