Front sight of my Colt 1911 has gotten dirty from all the firing

When mine gets like that I use a mixture of polystyrene beads and kerosene. I rub it on the dirty part of the gun and then hold it over an open flame. A chain reaction occurs and forces the dirt out of the finish so you can wipe it off with a rag.
