I've had to put down several, and I like to be humane about it. Usually what I'll do is feed them. While the animal is taking down some chow, having a happy time, I put on in the back of the head, usually followed 1 or 2 more just to make sure it doesn't suffer. .22lr is just fine, although I'd use CCI stingers, just to be sure it goes clean through, so the animal doesn't suffer.

I raise chickens that I kill myself and eat. I hunt all manner of animals that I shoot and process myself. I dispatch cats from time to time on the farm and i can tell you that you did fine. I prefer to shoot them in the back of the head at the base and then two more follow ups to be sure. But no matter what they are going to spaz out. Thats just how the brain acts when destroyed. The only way for them to die without without the spasms is to kill by the heart.
