What is the significance of 'multi-role aircraft'? I've been watching a lot of Binkov's Battlegrounds lately and he's said that multi-role aircraft are important in air wars. Why? Actually I don't know much about modern airplanes. If someone is willing to autisticly whale on about the subject (what planes are currently in use by the world powers, how good the are, and so on) then that would be nice, because I know a lot about small arms, but I know next to nothing about airplanes. I mean it's not like there is a Hickok45-like channel on Youtube for airplanes. I'm never going to own a fighter jet, so information is both rarer and harder to understand, but I want to participate in discussions on these things whenever they come up so please enlighten me.

Pic unrelated.

First, Read "BOYD" : The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War for an in-depth, autistically detailed but easy-to-follow analysis of single-role versus multi-role development.

Then after you have finished Boyd, you'll have to read the counter-book that refutes the biases the Boyd author made in his biography.

I don't remember the name though but I'm sure an anon here who hates Col. Boyd can drop a pastebin to it.

It may seem like a lot to ask but honestly, as an Airman, I can say that the multi-role VS single-role fighter debate is rife with opinions and very little hard fact.

Everything you read will boil down to:

Single Role
>Mastery of one domain
>Mastery is total and complete
>Completely useless cross-domains to try and perform another role
>Cheaper to produce several single roles than one fuck-huge multirole

Multirole:
>Jack of all trades, master of none
>Can cross domains into other roles, but may be out-played by a single-role fighter specialized for it
>More expensive to maintain

AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN

>Appendix A: 10 exceptions to these lists
>Appendix B: 25 more exceptions to these lists
>Appendix C: An addendum to Appendix A calling it biased garbage because it didn't include Obscure Role X
>Appendix D: Unsubstantiated claims by someone with phony credentials
>Appendix E: 12 more exceptions refuting 12 in the other lists but secretly fabricated by a contractor who will get a sweet cut of the money if the AF swallows it
Appendix F: A long list of people who "can't be trusted" to give opinions on this argument created by people who also have biases.

So yeah OP, once you get the meat and potatoes of the debate down in those books you're only choice is to pick a faction and start calling other people names.

The F- 15 can handle bombs, long range and short range missiles. It can intercept and go fast as fuck, go on far away missions. Reconnaissance. Do it all.

Same for FA- 18, but smaller paylods of bombs/ missiles

F- 16 more nimble agile for up close, limited range, limited use.

Think of it like needing a stable of sports cars and trucks, but then making a crossover suvs that can be quick but also hold more goodz.

I think you're right. it might just be my autism flaring up but that cleavage line between the "breasts" looks to defined. Almost like someone drew it in the make it look like there is more depth to the pecs to create the illusion of cleavage. That and the shoulder to hips ratio.

Multi-role has it's niche in how much easier it is to maintain and operate a fleet. In the long run you can consolidate logistics efforts into a single chain for this multi-role aircraft allowing you to field more at a time, and maintain ops tempo because of this single chain. The drawback being that the airframe now has several sophisticated systems integrated in order to do as much as possible, however, single-role/specialized aircraft are not completely exempt from this because aircraft by design are highly sophisticated machines. All these sophisticated systems require specialized maintenance procedures, which adds to cost of operation. However, with a highly flexible fleet, you can do more with less aircraft. Need to do some long range interdiction? You can configure for it just fine. Need a BARCAP up? No problem. Need to perform SEAD/DEAD? Can do. The more you can do, and the more configurations available, the better really, it just needs to be weighted against the cost in performance in each specialized mission. But, again, the exception arises with more advanced munitions, where this performance penalty can be somewhat negated.

But enough of that, post more pics of cat bikinis.

A big reason that multiroles are so important is because of Lanchester's laws - the maths involved around quantity vs quality.

Lets say you have two imaginary air forces:

#1 is equipped with 500 single-role attack aircraft and 500 air superiority fighters.

#2 is equipped with 1000 multi-role fighters

If the multi-roles can at least do half the job of a single-role, they win the war. If the single-role fleet is even more split (EW, recon, maritime anti-ship, strike, attack, interceptor, fighter) then the multiroles get a greater and greater economy of scale cost advantage and they can perform even worse in each role. If there's only 140 fighters or interceptors, you can send 7 multiroles against every fighter / interceptor; so long as those multiroles can achieve better than an dismal 0.15:1 kill ratio, they can win.

Due to how there's a lot of shared requirements between roles (eg, an interceptor and fighter both ideally need a decent radar, missiles, supersonic capability, etc), you can often combine roles without much penalty. An F-22 is an interceptor, air superiority fighter, recon / ELINT jet, strike jet, SEAD aircraft and EW platform.
