Is there any real advantage to a pistol-calibre weapon having a gas-operated action?
Pic related is the Type 79 Submachinegun, which fires 7.62x25mm Tokarev

you dont have fuck huge bolt slamming all over the place

Gas piston, lighter bolt, and a decent spring could mean you never have to hit the back of the receiver and deposit energy in the shoulder. So, lighter recoil.

Weight.
The Chinese claim a Type 79 weighs 3.8-4.1lbs (depending on source).
For reference, a PPS-43 (dirt simple blowback) weighs about 6.8, despite having a shorter barrel.

Mostly comes down to the bolt. Almost every PCC uses simple blow back because it's easy, but that means you have to have a heavier bolt. There are some ok compromises for this though. AR9s have an ok sized bolt despite being blowback and are still crazy light.
