If you want to know why someone might pick a 1911 for general use including SD or specifically SD then that question is answered fairly easily by looking at all of the positive attributes that people apply to the 1911 and contemplating what if any handgun does all of those things better than it. several people have pointed out pretty much what people tend to like about them, saying that theres one firearm that exceeds the 1911 in each of those categories isnt much of a counter argument, you need all of them in one platform.

If you're asking why the 1911 is the best handgun in existence, you're wasting your time as the 1911 is not the best handgun in existence and neither is any other handgun universally going to be considered such.

It kills things adequately. A full-size frame with a 4" slide makes a good carry gun. A Springfield Armory Champion or similar is about the same size as a Makarov and can use flush-fit 8 round mags. Still rather on the heavy side but perfectly adequite for CC, especially if you live somewhere that 10-round(or less) mags are mandated.

Mixed feelings about the compact steyrs. the sights are a little strange, so's the take down procedure, the slide release is pretty small, and for some reason they have a plastic block in the bottom restricting you to 10rnds for the 9mm version. Everything else about the gun is above average though.
