The 2-PAM and the Atropine in the NAAK is a prescription drug. Same for the Valium that's also given.

I don't think you'll have much luck at RiteAid, and I wouldn't want to inject myself with something bought through questionable means.

Epi-pens might offer some protection, but the actual NAAK is not available OTC or through other legal means.

They also have a fairly short expiration date, so I'd be very very leery about buying them through unofficial channels.

In his defense, he's in NYC. It's unarguably faster to use public transit than to sit in traffic for forever and a day.

Given the state of your average subway car I'd be more worried about bio weapons being used. Also by the time you realize what's happening in a nerve agent attack, it'll be too late.

Bring a gas mask or respirator in a backpack. It'll also be useful in case of smoke or dust from an explosion. Might not keep you alive for long but better than nothing.

I specialized into NBC warfare during my time in army. I would not worry about it :). Same reason I don't carry level IV plates on me every day when shopping or working, it is just not worth the efford.

Gas mask does absolutely nothing against most chemical weapons.
I give you that with Co2 filter it is useful if subway catches fire, active carbon filter helps against dust, asbestos and small particulates you don't want to breathe.

One has to remember that once you have taken breath through filter it has max 72 hours of lifetime so don't "test" the filters.
