Yeah, and they're all standard military ball ammo right?

Belgian here. We are so fucking used to this bullshit that our EOD (DOVO) actually trains farmers to handle UXO (unless it's super large). The farmers put it by the road and DOVO comes pick it up once a week. If they did it any other way, they'd do nothing but drive around picking up shit.

Anyhow, due to the vast amounts of UXO we have in our soil, from both world wars, it's quite easy to find stuff.
A good friend of mine digs up kilos of unfired rifle ammo once a week, unloads it and sells the brass.
He also finds buckles, regimental insignias, rings, etc which turn out to be quite valuable.

But he has tales of digging up unexploded torpedos (which were carted off illegally to some guy's home), and near intact Vickers & Lewis guns. It's amazing how some types of mud and sand preserve the metal by displacing the air, thus stopping corrosion.
Mostly he finds rusted SMLEs, Lebels, Mausers, etc though. Often with all kinds of weird stuff stuck to it.

Best regions to hunt for this shit is obviously the coast after a heavy storm, high tide or low tide.
Obviously, you need to know wtf you're doing because sometimes small shipwrecks surface and the rusted edges are sharp as all fuck. There's also significant danger of collapsing sand if you dig too deep without supports, so you could be buried alive.
If shit is stuck vertically, it's often possible that you won't be able to dig it out before the tide rolls in again.

Either way, this is largely illegal, but cops don't seem to care for the most part. In their eyes, it's mostly harmless corroded useless ammo. The danger comes from total fucking idiots, who have no clue how to safely unload cartridges. Causing fires. Or idiots that do have a clue, but start posting how to reactivate Teller mines online so other idiots try it and fail. Having a mine explode in their face.
Some people end up storing huge amounts of 'active' UXO, resulting in explosions or even worse, gas starting to get released.
>>
>>33113519
>continued

I mention the Teller mines simply because last week a guy got raided after posting that kind of shit online and showing that he had physical remains of unknown soldiers on display.

The cops will overlook your dismantling of old ammo and sale for collectors or brass/copper/etc.
But posting how to reactivate mines & grenades will draw attention, and if you then show that you dug up skeletons and put them on display? That gets the cops motivated to come bust down your door.

For this specific guy, DOVO asked the police to evacuate all people living within 100 meters of his house, so I'm going to take a wild guess that he had a lot of active UXO stored...

If you like that, you'll love this:
What happens with ammo you have no use for after the first & second world war? Like mustard gas, chlorine, arsenic and so on? Well, you just dump it in front of the coast line. It'll be someone else's problem, right?

So, as it stands, there is a huge chemical weapons dump right in front of one of the most expensive & chique coastal towns of Belgium. A few decades ago, the army tried to dive there & dig stuff back up, but there was just so fucking much that it would've taken a thousand years to clear. So they just dumped more stand on it, barred all heavy ship traffic and called it a "no anchor zone".
So what happens now? Well, the shells decay and slowly start releasing their payload over time, poisoning the soil & water.

If a shell ever goes off, in the worst case it might cause a chain reaction, which in turn could potentially blanket most of the belgian coast in mustard gas, chlorine gas and arsenic. It's anyone's guess how likely that is.

What are the current plans? Well, it's unclear atm, but there's a group of people in government which wants to make it into an artificial island (so that it's properly covered up) and declare it a nature reserve (oh the irony).

Pic: Red area is "Paardenmarkt" ("horse market") the zone in which the ammo dump is located. Yes, the things on shore are houses & apartment buildings.

It's currently mostly harmless. Under a nice layer of sand, so any leakage is only released very slowly & deluded in water.
But there are some concerns that since the ammo is pretty much all in about the same condition, it'll start leaking together more. Which would then poison the water. Experts expect this to be many many decades away since the rusting is rather slow in these conditions.

But we'll need some solution to this as any solution would take multiple years to implement. The artificial island isn't a bad solution, but would likely be an issue for Knokke's coast line. If they want to keep their beach, they'll need constant dredging to prevent their beach from merging with the artificial island.

>I love shit like this.

Here's the suction head of a trialing suction hopper dredger. Imagine a huge vacum cleaner sucking up sand from the sea bottom. It sucked in a 1000lbs US made bomb. EOD had to come dispose of it.

Ironically, the same ship also once sucked in a smaller bomb into its pump. It then exploded. Luckily, this ship had (at the time at least) the largest pump of its type worldwide. This meant that it was huge. The bomb's explosion caused it to crack, but not explode into pieces.

Not off the beaten track, but if you get a chance, visit the Flanders Fields Museum (WW1): http://www.inflandersfields.be/en/practical
If you want "off the beaten track", I'd suggest going to places in the Ardennes, like Fort Eben-Emael (WW2): http://www.fort-eben-emael.be/en/

Paardenmarkt is estimated to -at least- contain 35000 tons of chemical weapons.

Pic is old belgian EOD (DOVO) dismanteling rig for chemical weapons. It was meant to remove the blasting cap (if possible) and suck out the chemicals. But this is a very slow process (10-15 dismantlings per day) and exposes EOD personnel to danger. This particular installation was destroyed by an explosion in 2012 if I'm not mistaken.

Well, I believe one in five shells fired was a dud on average, but you need to realize that the UXO found here is not always fired. A lot of mortar and smaller artillery ammo storage got overrun and left behind. Imagine small ammo bunkers getting shelled and covered, lost in time. Random crates left behind. Etc etc etc.

Pic: old grenades found & put into sand for transport. Small stuff like this tends to just be disposed by blowing the fuck up.

That's sort of the point of TNT, it doesn't just "go off". You need to add quite a bit of energy before that happens which means that it doesn't matter how much of it is sitting on the bottom of the Thames.
>>
>>33113761
>but you need to realize that the UXO found here is not always fired.
True, I hadn't considered that.
>>
>>33113827
As it degrades it becomes significantly less stable, so the threshold for setting it off drops. Eventually it might reach nitroglycerine 'light bump activation' levels of unstable.
>>
>>33113827
Different anon here, doesn't TNT deteriorate with age, and like, water? And the small nuke thing is stupid. Tiny Micro nuke sans radiation maybe.
>>
>>33113847
is this true?
>>
>>33113906
>is this true?

Dynamite sweats, which makes it super dangerous. But TNT doesn't really break down easily. It does delude into water and binds with soil, especially clay.
>>
>>33113671
Considering the state of London these days (a dystopia of bankers, hipsters, chavs, and Pakis), that would actually be quite an improvement.
>>
>>33113738
By the end of the war British quality control had dropped the dud rate to 1 in 250 000, which is pretty fucking exceptional if you think about century old manufacturing practices.

germanfag here
a couple of years ago my brother and his mates decided its a good idea to become friends with the social awkward "loner" in their class. So on one weekend they showed up at his place and started smoking weed with him.
Super happy and high the guy started to tell his new friends about his "hobby".
which was: looking for UXO´s of WW1 and WW2. so he told them his amazing stories, and my brother and his high mates were like:"wow cool dude"
so he ran to the next room and came back with some rusty 8,8cm rounds handing them to the high guys. They became super nervous and shit. but it was all cool.
until he decided to hand around some Chemical gas rounds from WW1 and he made a comment like: "haha, dont drop it i had no time to defuse these, haha"
from that moment he was friendless again.
