/Operator General/ is focused on the discussion of training methodologies, tactical doctrines (individual/team), and application of equipment (weapons, gear, comms).

Post targets for analysis, shitpost about TOB/C-clamping, and debate mission-specific gear requirements.

Seeing as this is a new /general/, constructive input regarding the direction and purpose of /OG/ is welcome.

Some instructional primers that sample appropriate topics can be found below. As with anything on the www, nothing should be taken as authoritative. This is a place for open exploration and discussion.

Does anyone have a decent sized version of OP's pic that he didn't scrawl over?
>>
Were vintage operators better because of the reliance on skills over gear and firepower?

Video raised some questions:

Body vs Weapon first?

Generally heard that body moves first on account of speed and need to get to cover. But I also believe sometimes body language can ruin the element of surprise, though surprise is usually an offensive element.

Is it safe to say that, unless you are executing (which is to say acting, not REacting which is defensive), body moves first?

On the other hand, if you have the initiative, better to produce gun first in order to establish dominance (this also assumes you have been able to achieve at least some positioning before execution)

trying to apply this primarily to CC holders

just had to ask nicely

If by rely on gear you mean they didn't overload themselves like the /gq/ fags do then yes. They took the bare minimum. The modern operator is better now due to the massive amount of intel they get before going in; modern intel capabilities are far beyond what they were in the past.
>>
>>33105310
Modern operators are probably more skilled because they've had decades of predecessors to learn from
>>
Is anyone here an expert on long range shooting, DMR roles or sniping? I'd like a professional long range shooter to give me the tips he wishes he knew earlier for urban environments. I only know how to get things done in the woods.

Currently training with a rem783 in 223, got one in 300wm for actual use. Bedded, same scope, running handloads, got all my drop charts etc.
>>
>>33105310
only real advantage modern operators have over retroperators is science
>physical training
>weapons training
marginal advancements in gear/weapons tech imo, might be more luxurious but rarely more effective

>>33105380
beat me to it

>>33105348
>overload themselves like the /gq/ fags do
lol /og/ larping in full effect. The pics I have seen are almost always lower-profile than operators.

Well gear is becoming more and more minimalistic, e.g. plate carriers, helmets, etc.
Also previous operators relied on intel, but obviously intel is easier to gain nowadays, and easier to use.

That being said I love the older operators because of how they did things. They didnt have optimized mil-spec super high speed gear. Many didn't use camos, had little to no protection.

Also fun to see how CQB, recon, medical treatment, moving under fire, etc. evolved. Things that are obvious for us today, but probably took years to develope from exoerience.

there is definitely an urban DMR infograph
main takeaways:
>fire once and move
>don't stick your barrel out of windows/holes
Gunshots in an urban environment tend to echo in a manner that may occlude their origin, but will surely alert the surrounding 5-10 blocks. Therefore suppressed .22lr takedown seems preferable (also on account of transportability) but by the same token, if targets are close enough to hear a suppressed .22 there's a good chance they know your location

The most obvious example of why modern operators are better is right there in your pic, we can see when our enemies cannot. The fact that all major operations are planned around lunar brightness is an indicator of how important it is. Air support is also up there.

I'm working on a stripped down gear queer pastebin for you guys. It'll read more like a checklist of the basic shit you want, the ammo water medical trinity, and the armor tradeoffs.
>>33105310
vintage operators died a lot. modern operators too, but the only reason anyone thinks vintage operators are "better" is they look cool. Their ops were also different. The modern operator when we think of modern operators is a door kicker, because that's what they've been doing for 16 years. Now take someone like Pat Mcnarma, 80's green beret doing spy shit in west berlin, that's a different line work.

>>33105348
but, we don't. I carry 5+1 primary mags and 1+1 pistol mags. we don't have nods or aren't getting nods, we don't wear helmets, lot's of guys don't even rock armor, there's only a few dumb faggots with faggoty ass shit like handwarmers

Social skills, the ability to pick up social cues, and the understanding of why those things are important is an incredibly undervalued "operator" skill.

You have to know how to project an image and what the right image is in order to have credibility with your audience. If you're training somebody, it doesn't matter if you're in Afghanistan or Alabama, if the audience doesn't see you as credible you won't teach them shit.

Same deal with anybody who has fantasies about being "greyman" (fugggg I hate this term btw). You will get a hell of a lot further if you can manage to be personable and seem instantly trustworthy or credible to a wide range of audiences.

Numero uno mistake a lot of fauxerators make when trying to seem credible is to think:"shemagh+beard+being loud" = "credibility" when it generally turns people off from the message. Loud and aggressive has a place, but not if you haven't established yourself as an authority first- loud right off the bat usually ends up looking like you're a short tempered fool.

This is also why a depth of knowledge is good. You should have more technical knowledge on a subject than what you're passing on in initial trainings to ensure you can answer any questions that come up. And if you don't know an answer, don't bullshit. Nothing wrecks a trainers credibility like making up some shit on the fly that the person being trained is going to disprove on their smartphone 30 seconds later.

we all do. unfortunately it's just a term that has to be used from time to time
>tfw looking for other ways of saying greyman is just euphemisms for normality eg hobo with a shotgun...

Your mention of social skills reminded me of this post:
http://vinjabond.com/6-methods-of-thinking-like-an-operative/

Improve your memory, influence people, be more aware of your surroundings, be able to read people, understand how actions will play out, etc

Seems like a good idea for anyone really, anytime, not just tactical operators operating tactically on tactical operations.
