Momentum is mass x velocity
Kinetic energy is ½mass x velocity squared

This is why while 5.56x45 has almost as much energy as 7.62x39 it has about half of the Russian rounds recoil.

So how about we reduce the bullet weight even further from the 4g of the 5.56x45 and increase powder load? Same amount of recoil but more power.

Energy isn't an exact translation into terminal ballistics.

This. It's important, but it's not everything

While that is true, 5.56 is pretty damn good at dumping energy and i see no reason why a bit lighter and faster bullet couldn't do the same.
>>
>>33103983
Dumping energy isn't going to help if there isn't a big enough bullet of the right construction to deliver that energy into the body. Not to mention that when you lighten bullets of the same diameter they have worse BC and SD to saw nothing of wind, and 5.56 already has shitty external ballistics.
>>
>>33103927
Because energy without mass results in too little effect
We actually had to step up the load in our ball rounds to 62gr I think, because shockingly, haji's eat multiples of these high speed varmint rounds before quitting, while a 7.62 has more than enough mass to drop someone on the first hit
>>
>>33104068
You don't necessarily have to shorten it, just replace some of the lead with aluminum or something along those lines.
>>
>>33103927
>this thread yet again
Arnt you tired of being btfo anon?
>>
>>33104100
I'd rather blame that on the 14 inch barrels of the m4, not enough velocity to shrapnel properly.
>>
>>33103983
Because at some point there just isn't enough bullet to cause acceptably lethal wounds.

Velocity and kinetic energy is certainly a factor, but tissue damage and blood loss is what actually kills someone.
>>
>>33104108
This is the first time i've ever made a thread on this subject and i've never seen a thread on this subject so i'm not quite sure what you are referring to.

Goddamnit. Go outside you fat fuck
>>
External ballistics. A small fast round is gonna bleed off energy due to pressure induced drag wicked fast and you'll be stuck with a round that doesn't perform for shit past 100 yards.

Bench resters pretty much do what you're talking about though.

What actually happens when there just isn't enough bullet? What happens to all the energy, i'm curious.
>>
>>33104115
They have too much velocity, they pass clean through tissue
Your average emaciated towelie doesnt have enough mass to cause most rounds to slow down. The majority of the human body is air pockets as well, not like gel tests want us to believe.
Also, the upgrade started with the marines, who use 20" barrels

>>
>>33104176
If a bullet shrapnels and still manages to go through the other side i'd say that the guy who was hit has a pretty bad wound now.
>>
>>33103927
You're not accounting for the external factors.

A hotter load means increased barrel wear. A lighter bullet is more susceptible to wind drift. You might also be looking at a decrease in effective range.

Instead of saying "more power", which is vague and causes autism, why don't we just say it has better terminal ballistics? Of course, for that to be a valid statement there would have to be a comparison in there somewhere.

Now we need to keep this thread going long enough for that one anon to discover it and have one of his little episodes.

The 14 inch barrels simply do not result in enough velocity.
>>
>>33103927
not enough bullet.
you have a big reinforced brick wall and have to destroy it. your options are:
>delivery truck doing 55mph
>pickup truck doing 75
>small compact car doing 95

your delivery truck is a good option, it's got weight, but not velocity. maybe it'll punch a big hole.
your small car might work, concentrate the force and make a good pinhole
your pickup is a good combo, get the weight and the speed/concentrated power but still enough size to punch an appreciable hole.

our delivery truck is 7.62x39 (and to some extent x51)
our compact is your shitty superfast 5.56
our pickup is normal 5.56 NATO
do you see why you're retarded?
>>
>>33104358
That's a bad metaphor though since with humans it's not all about puncturing the wall (skin) Doing internal damage is very important as well.
>>
>>33104438
if we assume that there's a room full of shit (as in a house) on the other side of the wall, does that make you feel better?
I'm trying to keep it simple to communicate with the mongs

5.56 (or any other cartridge) could be made to fragment effectively at low speeds, while still providing good penetration and performance out of shorter barrels/at longer ranges. Just need to make it tumble at low speed, and thin out the jacket for reliable fragmentation.
>>
>>33104470
I can see that, i wonder why they haven't done it then since 14 inch is pretty much the standard for the US armed forces.

Velocity kills barrels. You also get diminishing returns because there is a retarded move to shorten barrels more and more which rape the potential of SCHV projectiles.

The flechette rifles took this concept to its logical conclusion and concluded that it doesn't work. Projectiles with little momentum are more heavily effected by wind and barriers
