Question: why don't more tanks have secondary weapon systems? As early as 1966 the French had a coaxial 20mm autocannon on the AMX-30, the Merkava has a fucking mortar in the turret, and the Swiss had the Panzer 61 with a similar autocannon design until they were removed in a refit. But every NATO armored vehicle is standardized on the 120mm Rheinmetall 120mm, a 7.62, and a .50BMG. Why not keep the autocannon, for killing soft-skinned vehicles? Or add pop-up ATGM launchers?

Because it takes up space and adds weight to a platform where those two thing are already at a premium.
>>
Seems like you can just fire 120mm HEAT rounds if there's something the 50 won't deal with.
>>
Mostly I think to improve crew comfort, packing a 20mm into an already cramped turret degrades performance with little practical gain. It's also another potential fail point in the armor. Like machine gun ports in the hull armor.

It's expensive.
It takes up space that can be used for other subsystems or ammunition. And you have less ammunition overall if you opt to remove the coaxial MG + ammo for the cannon + ammo.
You already have a cannon big enough to fuck anything up. The margin of stuff that's "not worth" a 120mm shell and the stuff that's too far/heavily armored for a .50 is relatively small.

Worth separating the Merkava's mortar in the discussion, since it's more for the utility of flares and smoke than the fragmentation.

Because HEAT/HE is more than capable of killing vehicles.
>>
>>33082283
You'd be surprised how many things a cannon will kill.
>>
Just need some low velocity airbursting rounds to be developed

In Americas case the secondary weapon system to the Abrams is air superiority

just look at how packed a BMP 3 is and its only a 100mm gun

Except autocannon ammo is much larger and heavier than .50 BMG ammo, much less 7.62 NATO. So you can carry a couple hundred rounds instead of a few thousand, which means more frequent rearming, which in the long run means more main gun rounds being expended on soft targets after you run out of autocannon.

An autocannon will be always more effective against infantry and light armored vehicles than a mere heavy machine gun, therefore avoiding use expensive main gun rounds for nothing.

Good point about the MG ports, and why secondary weapons have been shifted outside the armor. I could see a remotely operated mk 19 station, but it would clutter up the turret.

Anon, the bmp-3 packs a 30 mm coaxial autocannon...

The AMX-40 carried 578 twenty-millimeter rounds, almost twice the amount of .50 rounds carried by the Russian T-90.

It's cute too. Sort of a 'take your daughter to work day' barrel arrangement.
>>
Doesn't really benefit the role of a Main Battle Tank to have a secondary weapon that doesn't assist much at high movement speed.

>30 mm coaxial autocannon
the BMP-3 armament consist of a 100mm gun and a 30 mm autocanon also a secondary PKT mg

Also that is a BMD 3 which is the airborne version

Was wondering where the hull mg's went... The BMP-3 is really orky.

Question, as long as we're on this subject. Did the Type-74 ever actually mount 40mm grenade launchers, or is that something Wargame made up?
>>
The autocannons and ATGM's are there. They are just mounted on the IFVs and helicopter gunships.

Only a retard packs everything onto one platform in the age of combined arms.
