What does France actually expect to use this thing for? And against whom?

I'm genuinely curious. They're not bordered by any hostile countries and all of the real action happens in post-colonial hellholes that don't have any tanks anyway.

Was it all just to sell them to the arabs?

Your question is fucking bait but i'll bite anyway. Keep in mind it is a product of the late-ish cold war. It was designed differently than the other western MBTs of that time, like the Leo 2, M1A1, Chally 2, which were expected to "hold the line" indefinitely against the oh so terrible hordes of russian MBTs zergrushing through the fulda gap. France' army had the role of a "second line country" (though but no means second rank) not expected to directly defend against sovietic armies like the formers deployed in Germany, but to launch counter attacks against them.

The initial reflexion was for "anything anti-tank and highly mobile" and for quite some time they were about to go with buttloads of attack helicopters and airborne troops, no kidding, until they realized how widespread MANPADs were in the Warsaw Pact armies and so utterly unsurvivable the idea was. Let's drop the helo plan and go on a middle ground with an offensively minded MBT, shall we? So the Leclerc was designed differently and a bit like an attack helo on track, technicaly superlative, no expense barred and supposedly able to dominate its opponent (requirement was to be able to come out on top of a 1 against 3 modern T-72 engagement) even if it needed superior maintenance when out of combat. In case of WW3 you would have seen armored units of Leclerc accompagnied by tracked anti-air, IFVs and associated units exploiting gaps in the Eastern formations and performing high speed low drag drive-by on hopefully unsuspecting rear echelon units waiting to get to the front, before heading back to friendly territory for R&R.

>Le Leclerc was designed to be super better NATO tank

Except Abrams does everything the Leclerc does only with better lethality, vastly better protection, better crew survivability and vastly better electronics, FCS, C4I and sights. Leclerc has an edge in mobility, but thats not a lot of benefit for the armor it had to give up and the retarded ammo placement in the frontal hull.

It has a focus on mobility, that is true. But this whole LECLERC IS SUPER NINJA PREMIER TANK meme is pretty ridiculous. On top of the MUH SPECTRA crap from French tech threads these days it's getting a bit annoying.
>>
>>33081340

They wanted us to have a military up until the point that Russia ceased becoming an enemy of the west, so now the point is moot.

>muh american tank does everything better!

You need to learn to be less defensive, mate. Feel free to re-read what i said and point me where i stated that the Leclerc was objectively better. I merely said it was designed with different requirements that justified designing something new considering the specific need, and the fact france had both the technical means and political desire to maintain an independent MBT production capability.

While there is no debate when it comes to armor, the other points are however vastly debatable at time of design and initial introduction of Leclerc.

I'd certainly give the edge to modern M1A2SEP-something over modern Leclerc Series XXI, though.
>>
>>33085714

Because you explicitly say "other NATO tanks were designed to do this"

Then go on to describe something that other NATO tanks can do just as well, if not better, as though it's some super speshul Leclerc only ability to do rapid assaults, just because it's slightly faster, despite being worse off in every other way to some NATO vehicles.

Oh dear god read the other Anon's message, will you ? He's clearly speaking of when it was designed, he's not comparing today's performances. For example, the Leclerc was designed from the get go to fire on the move, and when it was released it was much, *much* better at doing so than the Abrams, Leo or Challenger 2. Obviously with 20 years of development they caught up (and yet... I wish I could see how they'd fare at 60 kph against a target moving at 90 kph 2km+ away. At least we'd know and wouldn't have to speculate).
Also, better lethality ? Wut ? "Vastly better" protection, sights, electronics ? And you base these assumptions on... (I mean, other than pure jingoïsm) ?

>>33090570

In addition the one used in the 90s were the 105 rods resaboted... The very first 120mm were exactly like the 105 ammunition down to the sabot design exept the case which had a combustible skirt and a case base (or stub depending on how you call it...).

Leclerc actually has APS that stops missiles simialr to Rafale technology, it fires bigger ammo and moves very fast with better armor. Americans focus only on HEAT armor, Leclerc has both HEAT and ADFSDS armor. And it have longer vision at 12x.

Yup, Duroc was a prototype dedicated to the mobility tests. The turret was kept by the constructor to qualify some evolutions.

Graet museum really. A good time to visit is by the end of July for the Carrousel, where they reenact bits of history using the old tanks. Always cool to see a FT-17 or Tiger II running.

>M829A3 is certainly not matched by the Leclerc's ammo.
You have the data to back that up?

>That and DU functions better at the velocities the M256 uses.
Oh you mean this pic:
http://www.longrods.ch/bilder/v_opt.jpg
Absolute apex of DU's performance is actually in the 1600-1700 m/s for BHN 250 and it goes all the way to 1700-1900 m/s for BHN 350, but then again you have to account for the velocity loss which is typically 50m/s/km and with the A3's muzzle velocity of 1555m/s it just means it didn't even reach the 1600 m/s needed to achieve peak performance, and actually loses anywhere from 10 mm to 20 mm off from velocity drop against a target 2km. If you really want to maximize DU's performance you should shoot it at close to 2km/s, but then again Tungsten's curve looks much better at those regimes.
But I highly doubt this works just as simple as that,, especially with current projectiles actually being optimized against special armors: for example the manufacturer of teh DM 53 projectile claims that from an L/55 it could penetrate a special armor array worth 1000 mm RHAe. It can't penetrate 1000 mm of RHA itself, but an equivalent special armor array that can stop "conventional" APFSDS rods that can do.
