The only time I ever had a shit day at the range was when an RSO accused me of stealing brass when I was picking up my own, and he in turn stole my brass and several en blocs from my Garand.

I went through 150 rounds and it seems like it would have better not to shoot at all, worse than no progress, I regressed.

Only time I had a shit day at the range is when I brought my friend, shot like shit, and had to yell at him for moving the barrel side to side when he couldn't figure out the mag release.

My answer: dry fire, dry fire and more dry fire. Then go again and have a non shit day.

Go back to the range on the same day after deciding what you want to work on. Make sure you at least make yourself happy with the results.

Made this mistake too. When i get my own place ill get a drill press and pin my gas blocks, til then i tighten them as much as i can without stripping the setscrews and its been working for me so far. At least we learned at the range and not in a HD scenario. If youre not too handy or wont use your press for anything besides your gas block you could probably just take it to a gunsmith and it should be a cheap job.

I did that too on a few guns, but my rickety-ass vice doesnt let me drill the holes nicely so they hardly ever lined up. Luckily i found that tightening the hell outta the screws works just as well too. I do it enough so the barrels actually bulge a little and the extra friction could probably hold the gas block on its own (i need a hammer and punch [read: allen key] to move it) then have the set screws there for insurance. Its definitely a bit of a hackjob but i dont have the money or space for nice tools right now.
