Let's see. The US were part of an UN peacekeeping operation in Mogadishu. One of the stronger warlord was having a meeting, and the US decided to crash it. Something they did not have a mandate for or had coordinated with the other UN forces. A fairly small force went in, badly armored and lightly armed, expecting the warlord forces to scatter to the wind at the first shot. Instead the Somalis had the audacity to have a plan for defending their territory, including rpg's. So once the US struck the defense plan came into effect. Choppers were hit at low height. Most of the deaths came during the street battles. The Somalis lost what, 5000 people? And the US learned a few valuable lessons.
