if ARs are so great why cant you put a mag in with the bolt closed?

Really though, why can't I insert a fully loaded 30 round mag into my ar with the bolt closed?

With my lancer mags I can push a loaded one in with the bolt closed without even having to slap it.

Make sure you actually loaded 30 rounds. Slap the bottom of the magazine to make sure it seats.

AK's rock and lock gives more leverage against the magazine spring. That's why it seems that way.

Not the op, but I have a PSA premium upper and this happens to me occasionally. It seems like a magical problem that happens sometimes regardless of magazine or load. I slap the mag into place every time and occasionally it just doesn't catch for whatever reason. I've even had it misfeed because of it.
