A total bath is not necessary although it's sometimes the easiest.

The only parts that are likely to be affected are going to be forward if the chamber. I like to take the BCG out and clean that along with the recoil spring. Then the barrel, gas block, gas tube, rear sight block, and the muzzle brake and the muzzle threads all get rinsed with preferably warm-to-hot water. Then you need to get it completely dry and oil the surfaces.

Problem with just dunking it is that you increase the chance of rust appearing in places throughout the rifle that are hard to reach. Namely the steel between the receiver and the bolt rails. Water gets in there and starts causing rust and there's nothing you can do about it.

I have three 5.56 AR's, and a 6.5 Grendel precisionish build.

I'm not sure what brand of AK to get, or what caliber. As an AK noob, I would love some assistance. Budget is $500-1000, but if cheaper is an option, i'll follow it.

Don't buy corrosive ammo pointlessly? I hope it was a lot cheaper than something like 25c/r after shipping. Otherwise you are doing a lot of extra work and going to have to watch that rifle like a hawk after every time you shoot it for a while, even if you think you did clean it well enough.

sorry in advance for the novel.

a friend of mine got a suppressor for his WASR and I was with him on the day he tested it. after one shot he took it apart and noticed a VERY slight nick on the edge of the baffle farthest from the muzzle.
instead of continuing to shoot it, we headed home and began thinking of how to remedy the problem.
imagine that the sight post was 12 o'clock on the watch face. so straight down would be 6. his baffle strike was at around 4 o'clock. which told him the bore was pointing that way ever so slightly. he he decided to add a thin washer between the muzzle and the suppressor, file down slightly the half of the washer that was centered at 4 o'clock (he drew a line on the washer at 2 and 8) allowing the suppressor to tilt in that direction very slightly, bringing the suppressor back in alignment with the bore.
obviously he notched the washer to work with the detent. filed the washer a bit. marked which side of the washer would always go toward the suppressor, and started test firing/filing. he also used a sharpie to cover up the nick, so he could see new ones if/when they were created.
after about an hour he got rid of the nicks, and continued filing a bit more to make sure it was as close to centered as he could estimate. he will have to always use the washer, with the correct side facing the suppressor, but it's not a huge deal and he just stores it with the suppressor.

tl;dr a washer can be filed slightly on one side then used between the muzzle and the suppressor to center the baffles over an off center bore

Oh, and by not filing on the suppressor itself it can be used on other AK's, which could get their own washer if necessary.

I keep hearing this meme. I read the full text of 922(r) and can't figure out what part or definition relies on AWB text. Can you advise?

Worrying about 922(r) is still entirely pointless for the end-user, even if the law is valid. Owning a non-compliant rifle is perfectly legal. You would first need to be arrested for some other serious shit like selling full-auto weapons out of your garage. Something to get your non-compliant weapons confiscated and the ATF involved (the reg is utterly unknown to anyone except them). The ATF would then have to prove that:
1. The rifle is non-compliant. This is not trivial since US parts don't have to be labeled as such.
2. YOU assembled the non-compliant rifle into its current configuration. If you bought a non-compliant rifle you haven't violated the law.

The whole idea of 922(r) was to prevent scary assault weapons from being imported featureless and reassembled in the US (since US options for many AK parts did not exist yet). Obviously this now is being done every day by Arsenal, Century, etc. The "white paper" recently published by the #2 honcho at the ATF admits that this approach has failed and it's time to re-assess "sporting purpose" in light of the huge popularity of MSRs.

I found a fucking straight-up, no shit, actual AKM in a pawn shop earlier today, it has a metal plate pinned in on the right side that seems to be there to stop the selector from going down past semi-auto, it's in perfect condition, it has a picatinny rail on the dustcover that looks like it was electro-welded by a proffesional (bad idea, but it means the last owner had some money to waste), and it's only up for $600.
It would be my first gun, and I would care for it as though it were the child I will never have, but after insurance and food bills this week, my next paycheck will put me at barely $500 dollars, and that's NEXT. FRIDAY.
I'm utterly terrified that some hood nigga is just going to walk in out of the ghetto directly behind said shop and buy it, then dump it someplace damp and never care for it.

This thing is at hi-point range around here. There is actually a hi-point next to it for $500.

It had RU-style handguards, lighter colored wood on the bottom,
exposed ends of the bolt return things on the back of the reciever on either side of the hammer,
a black plastic grip,
a shovel-shaped flash-hider,
a straight topped stock with a steel butt plate,
and the fire-selector was definitely 3-position, but there were pins through the other side to prevent it from going all the way down to full-automatic.
The pins were also holding a sort of squared-off plate in place over some of the left side of the reciever.

I need some help.I got a 308 vepr with the straight cut receiver with the rear sight on the gasblock.Who makes the parts id need to convert the front end to use standard ak hand guards.

It's actually very secure. It adjusts the suppressor so that it's centered over the bore and it locks the suppressor into the detent very tightly with no wobble. It's a steel washer so it hasn't deformed any, and has held it's size and shape.

Since he owns several AK's he wanted to leave the back of the suppressor flat and unchanged so it can be used on any of his AK's. The WASR was the only one that didn't have a concentric bore so it was the only one that needed the washer.

I understand why you would think it's sketchy but I think if you saw it in use you might be surprised by how well it works and how solid it is.

Baby's first AK. Assembled from a PSA gen 2 build kit. I didn't like the wood grip it came with so I slapped on a kvar glossy plum one, also put a 74 style brake because I can't stand the look of the slants. The ALG trigger is insane. It's sub 3#, actually too low for my liking. I added a higher power hammer spring, I think from JP. It made it a little firmer but it's still quite a low pull. Popping her cherry tomorrow.

Got bored at work while on break so i decided to compare a few of my 5.45 mags.
I noticed some interesting things.
My EG Bake has far cleaner stampings on the floor plate and seems to be a high overall quality than my Izzy plums or true black.
My true black was noticeably lighter than either the plum or EG bake. It also has a nifty little hole in the bottom of the follower and spring assembly allowing the use of a bullet point in disassembly. Kinda cool to think about, also the pics i took really show the difference between a plum and true black.

Laminate woods (engineered materials) are more stable than hardwood. The reason they went to a laminate is because the handguards don't contract and expand as much with moisture along with the fact that they last longer and are less prone to rot.
