the cam pin cut out is a void that allows the cam pin to freely move in the cam pin slot in the bolt carrier group. the "cam" action that rotates the bolt and the bolt carrier is the expansion of gas against the tail of the bolt and the interior of the bolt carrier. this expansion attempts to push the bolt forward, which unlocks the bolt.

premature unlocking, or a weird gas impulse will wear at this location because the cam pin is dragging against the interior of the upper receiver. this isn't normal, and generally it means you have a tad too much gas in the system. it's not really harmful either, and will normalize over time, but it isn't normal.

Unlike a clamshell, it doesn't transmit torque through the upper. It locks into the barrel extension, much like a Geissele reaction rod. You can also remove the bolt from the BCG and slide it into the upper behind the block and lock it onto that lug with the o-ring to keep the receiver from floating around while you work.

The AR bolt is different than that of the M1 garand or the AK which copied the garand bolt.

Take your BCG out. Push on the face of the bolt. It will rotate closed because there's nothing preventing it from doing so.

Now imagine the BCG moving into battery. The face of the bolt is pushing on the top round of the magazine. The bolt wants to rotate closed. It can't, because the cam pin is in the charging handle slot. Once it reaches the cam pin cutout it will begin rotating closed as soon as there is clearance.

The AK and M1 garand have features on the bolt that prevent the bolt from attempting to close prematurely. Take an AK bolt and put it in the most forward position and push on the bolt face. It's not going anywhere, unlike the AR.

I like mine. I've put a few hundred rounds through it and only had 1 malfunction (But I think it was my fault). Only thing I hate about the AR556 is holy fuck those takedown pins. You will seriously need a punch and hammer to take it apart because those pins are in impossibly god damn tight, I had others look at it and they said no AR on this planet should have takedown pins that tight.
