A few days ago I drunkenly bid on an 1884 Springfield Trapdoor rifle in the current Rock Island auction, and promptly forgot about it. Today, I got an E-mail telling me that I won the auction. The bid was $550, which is about $650 after fees. Not sure how much shipping will be.
How badly did I fuck up, /k/?
Pic related, the exact rifle in question.

Here's the other side.

Trapdoor loads only and go remove buffalo and drunk reservation dwellers. But seriously trapdoor loads only and have fun playing artillery past 200m you will be surprised how doable 500 can get

did you just have a stroke
>>33027647
No just making sure the important shit got through so you dont get an 19th century glocknade

OP here, I appreciate the advice. What exactly constitutes a trapdoor load? I assume BP and lower pressure, but do you have any specifics?
>>33028129
Low pressure. Smokeless is okay if you reload, but pretty much all factory loads produced after ~1950 are too high pressure.
I hope you reload. If you do, most reloading manuals have a section specifically for trapdoors.

Yeah, DO NOT just go .45-70 from the store as most of it is made for modern level action loading.
A couple companies do legit Trapdoor loads such as Buffalo Arms unless you would like to load your own.

Here is the load I buy for my 1873.
Enjoy, it's a sweet rifle.

and I just now realized I posted the wrong pic.
>>33027415
i picked up two pretty close to that(with bayonets) for about $150 per at a fine art auction once.
>>33028246
Bullshit.
Most commercial 45-70 is loaded to trapdoor pressures as that is SAAMI spec. Any that is not is clearly labelled as such on the box.

Thanks for the info guys. I don't currently reload (this will only be the second firearm of my own, and I didn't even buy it while sober, lol). I'll take special care to only buy the appropriate loads.
>>33028451
Nice. I would imagine the people at a fine art auction would be among the least likely to know anything about guns.
>>33028469
The cutoff is 24,000 PSI/22,000 CUP according to several sources.
SAAMI max is 29,000 PSI and most factory loads such as Hornady Leverevolution and Remington Express are 28,000+PSI. They are NOT safe in a Trapdoor.
>>33028827
I would agree and not even consider using a modern loading.
I've fired the BuffaloArms I posted a link to and can confirm that is safe and good to go. OP I would just stick to that or another loading that is similar or "original" loading. Don't go trying to get fancy or cheap, I know $36 is a bit much for 20 rounds but I'd like to keep my hands, face and rifle.
>>33028827
correction, MAP for .45-70 is 28,000 CUP, ans while there isn't a hard and fast way to calculate PSI it'll be around that.
>>33028890
Ah fuck it's sideways. Oh well..
My grandpa gave one to my brother. That thing is fun as fuck to shoot.

alright, thats going to bug me... let me try again.
