.22 rifle if possible, .22 pistol if not. Bolt actions or other manual ones are nice since there's less of a chance of either just mag dumping or ND after the initial shot. If pistol start them out with 1 round at a time.

Other then that, other calibers work but you definitely want less recoil, less noise. Suppressors help in this regard as well, as does electronic ear pro to give instructions easily.

I am setting up a pistol and a rifle for this purpose. Ruger 22/45 and a Mauser .45ACP conversion. Ideally both with cans (don't have a .22 one yet) and red dots and just take as much out of the equation as possible.

Oh and with new shooters sometimes it's fun to capstone the day with a neat gun. If they like history, big booms, large calibers let them have at.

Remember with new shooters that you want to keep an eye on them (flagging people happens a lot with questions or surprise) and provide gentle instruction. Yelling and getting frustrated isn't going to enamor them to the experience. It sounds lame but if there's an RO consider letting them know there's an inexperienced shooter. If they're not a dick they'll hopefully be lenient if something dumb but harmless happens.

I've done this numerous times and it's always a success.

Start with basics around a 22 pistol. Once they feel comfortable with that, shoot a 9mm pistol first (avoid DA triggers). Let her shoot it. Always demonstrate first before letting her go into it.
Then I take out a wheel gun for some variety and shoot 38 special so it's easy. Once everyone has gotten a good amount of rounds down with those then I bust out the Thompson and AR. Let them bench redt the heavy guns. Newbies want to see exciting shit so let them have fun. At the end of the day it's about establishing a good foundation for safety, fun, and getting laid so have a lot of fun out there. I'll do drills where I draw different shapes and colors and call them out for them to shoot. Make it a little challenging too.

The key is being a good teacher and teach fluidly. Know what you'll need to tell them and be confident. Reassure them that the gun isn't going to fly out of their hands

Finish with nugget to get her wet without breaking her. The length of it will allow you to assist her from behind while she shoulders it since she will most likely have trouble. Affix bayonet for added certainty.
