It was never intended to be something in between .40 and 10. It was an efford to copy 125 gr .357 mag performance in something that can fit in a double stack pistol magazine. Not an unreasonable idea, at least not in the early/mid 90's.

I'd much rather have a .357 Sig over a .40 S&W or .45 GAP. For some loads it replicates .357 mag performance well, especially if you handload or buy hot stuff like underwood, buffalo bore, etc.

Yes. Because it hits the pistol caliber sweet spot. It's more powerful and has better barrier penetration than a 40s&w AND 45ACP, and has less muzzle flip than 40s&w and 10mm. It kicks just as much as a 9mm, just has more flash/sound.

I've been mulling over getting a .357 Sig conversion barrel for one of my guns and I never could justify it. The only thing it seems to bring to the table is hard barrier penetration.

Other than that, it's an overly expensive round as the good stuff that would make .357 Sig worth it are about $1/rd or more. Generic ammo is fine for plinking/practicing, but doesn't have much more kinetic energy than a typical .40 or .45 load (both of which you can get in high-energy loads). You also shouldn't fall for the Magnum-level power meme either as the comparison with Sig is only true for lower loaded Mag cartridges, but the Mag can be loaded to be much much hotter than the Sig ever could. Also, necked cartridges are a pain to reload which only reloaders who like tedious chores would enjoy. Furthermore, the variety of choices for affordable Sig guns is a very small pool (which is why I was looking for a simple conversion barrel for an existing gun I had).

In my opinion, if you want a powerful cartridge get a real .357 by buying a Magnum gun. If you must insist on shooting novelty rounds, get a gun in 10mm. The only reason to have .357 Sig is if you just REALLY want to shoot/carry .357 Sig.
